Mother, daughter to graduate together

Huntington, Ind.—This spring, several parents will watch sons and daughters take the triumphal walk across the commencement platform to receive a hard-earned degree. From there, the student will look across the crowd to find the smiling faces of their loved ones. This Saturday at Huntington College, there will be two students that won’t have to look far.

Susan Frantz, and her daughter, Jodi, residents of South Whitley, Ind., will both graduate from Huntington College on May 14, 2005. Jodi will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology while Susan will earn an Associate Degree in organizational management through the EXCEL Program.

Both said that it was nice to share an educational experience together, commenting that the best part was their ability to understand what the other was going through.

“It was nice to know that she had a taste of what I was going through, but also when I go home for a break, there are two of us doing homework instead of just me,” Jodi said.

The pair often found themselves in a position to help each other. However, Jodi recalled one of the setbacks with a smile, “Until my mom started school, I always gave her my papers to proofread, but since she has started classes, I proofread all of her papers and give mine to the Learning Center to read.”

Sarcastically, Jodi concluded, “Somehow I believe I got the bad end of the deal here…maybe I should start charging her!” 

“The rest of the family has been very supportive throughout the past several semesters,” Susan said. In fact, college life has turned into a family affair as Susan’s husband and Jodi’s father, Michael Frantz, recently began taking classes in the EXCEL Program.

After graduation, the Frantz ladies plan to continue their own education. Jodi will marry in August and anticipates attending graduate school for clinical or mental health psychology. Susan will continue in the EXCEL Program to receive her Bachelor of Science degree.
