Master of Education classes to begin Spring 2005

FOR RELEASE November 24, 2004
HUNTINGTON, IN—The Indiana Professional Standards Board unanimously approved all proposed Huntington College Master of Education programs last week, allowing the institution to begin offering classes toward the M.Ed. degree this spring. This announcement comes just six months after the College declared its expansion in master’s programs last May.

The College, which currently offers five masters programs in Christian ministries, adds 11 degrees in the Master of Education program. Degrees are offered in the following areas:

  • M.Ed. in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction

  • M.Ed. in Elementary Reading

  • M.Ed. in Early Adolescent (Middle School) Education

  1. Math

  2. Science

  3. Social Studies

  4. Language Arts

  • M.Ed. in Adolescent and Young Adult (High School) Education

  1. Math

  2. English

  3. Social Studies

  4. Biology

  5. Chemistry

The Master of Education program is targeted primarily at classroom teachers. It is also open to those who have graduated from a teacher education program at a regionally accredited college or university within five years of the date of application but are not currently teaching and to teachers who choose to attend classes for continuing education and professional development.

Students in the M.Ed. program will be required to take four core curriculum courses in the program including Action Research Methods; Differentiated Instruction for the Inclusive and Diverse Classroom; Classroom Management; and Integration of Technology in the Classroom. All other classes will focus on the students’ developmental and content areas, including research that focuses on their individual interests.

“This unique curriculum design is intended to be very focused, efficient and flexible to each student’s needs,” said Dr. Terrell Peace, professor of education at the College. “A degree can be completed in as few as three semesters and one summer or at a more leisurely rate, using the classes as an opportunity for professional development.”

Peace stated that specialization of degrees, proximity, competitive price, convenient class times, expert faculty, and convenience of getting started were also benefits of the program. The projected tuition will be $280 per semester hour, a price very comparable to those of state universities. Class times will be held in the evenings by full-time faculty, making it convenient for current teachers across the region to attend classes. Students can begin taking classes once a one-page application is completed and approved. Application and admission to the program can take place while classes are in progress.

The Huntington College Master of Education program is aligned with the conceptual framework of the teacher education program that views the teacher as an effective steward of knowledge, steward of learner development, steward of environment, and steward of instruction. The program is also aligned with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Two courses toward the M.Ed. degree will be offered this spring. Differentiated Instruction for the Inclusive and Diverse Classroom will be held Tuesdays from 6-8:45 p.m., and Classroom Management will be held Thursdays from 6-8:45 p.m. For more information on the Master of Education program or to receive the one-page application, contact Dr. Terrell Peace at (260) 359-4231 or the Huntington College Registrar at (260) 359-4011.
