College hosts High School Mathematics Competition

HUNTINGTON, IN—  The semiannual Huntington College High School Mathematics Competition was recently held in Science Hall on the campus of Huntington College. This year’s competition was coordinated by sophomore mathematics education major Eric Throne and advised by Dr. Patrick Eggleton, associate professor of mathematics.

Eight area high schools competed in the competition in attempts to take home both individual and team awards for demonstration of mathematical ability. Competing schools included Ayersville High School of Defiance, Ohio, Compass Home School of Andrews, Ind., Kokomo Area Schools at Home (KASH) of Kokomo, Ind., Adams Central High School of Monroe, Ind., North Miami High School of Denver, Ind., Southwood High School of Wabash, Ind., Hamilton Southeastern High School of Fishers, Ind., and Temple Christian School of Lima, Ohio.

Hamilton Southeastern finished in first place with a total of 520 points, redeeming their championships from both the spring and fall competitions of 2004. In second with 465 points was Ayersville High School followed by Adams Central and North Miami who tied for third with 400 points.

Individual awards were given to Tim Doenges of Ayersville who won a tie-breaker for the gold against Hamilton Southeastern’s defending individual champion, Brian Thomas. Adams Central’s Jordan Stroup won a three-way tie-breaker for third place against Nick Maag from Ayersville and Aaron Hershberger from Hamilton Southeastern.

The competition is made up of three rounds. The first round is a 20 question written exam comprised of questions from algebra through calculus. Students can earn up to 100 points for this round. The second round tests individual skill. They are each given two minutes to complete 10 questions with 10 points awarded for correctly answered questions after one minute and five points for questions correctly answered after the two minutes. In the final round each team is presented with a multi-task problem that is best solved through the cooperative efforts of the entire team. There are a possible 25 points awarded for this round.

The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve great things in mathematics.
