Business seminar to discuss economic development

HUNTINGTON, IN—Jim O’Donnell, associate professor of business and executive-in-residence at Huntington College, and Ned Kiser, vice president for advancement at Huntington College, will lead a seminar on “Economic Development,” focusing on the implications of economic development and the quality of life in a local community. This Visiting Executive Seminar will be held Friday, October 29, from 8:45 a.m. to noon, in the upper level of the Habecker Dining Commons at Huntington College.

The discussion will center on a series of articles on entrepreneurship and business formation that appeared earlier this summer in a Wall Street Journal (7-12-04) special section. In earlier times, enlightened business owners invested, not only in their businesses, but also in the town, its people, and the quality of life from which they resided. Today, many larger business enterprises are owned by absentee investors, who are most interested in the “bottom line” and only marginally interested in the life of the larger community in which their business operates.  This change continues to happen in smaller towns and cities across America.

The Visiting Executive Seminar will be attended by business and civic leaders from the regional community, as well as Huntington College faculty, staff and students. The event will be structured to foster open dialogue and discussion of the issues and recent case studies. The public is cordially invited to attend, free of charge.
