Evans to present lectures in 'Controversies of Science'

FOR RELEASE November 22, 2005

HUNTINGTON, IN—Dr. Bruce D. Evans, professor of biology, will present lectures at Northwest State Community College in Archbold, Ohio, on Thursday, December 1, 2005.  Evans will give the inaugural lectures in a series titled “Controversies in Science.”

The topic for both lectures is “Controversy in Life’s Origins,” with the first lecture for students from several classes at 12:15 p.m. and the second open to the public and held at 7 p.m.

“The current cultural climate is rife with controversy in the area of evolution and intelligent design,” Evans said.  “These issues are very important to many of us, and I hope to shed light on some of the major arguments supporting these different views about how life came to be the way it is today.”

Evans received a bachelor of science degree in biology in 1985 from the University of Charleston, W.V., and a Ph.D. in neurobiology in 1991 from Emory University.  Prior to coming to Huntington University in the fall of 1991, Evans pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University in collaboration with researchers at Brandeis University while teaching part-time at Atlanta Christian College.

Evans currently serves as chairman of the Biology Department and premedical advisor at Huntington University.  Evans has attended conferences at Baylor, Biola, and Yale Universities devoted to the discussion of recent developments in the area of intelligent design, and also presented at the Research and Progress in Intelligent Design conference at Biola University in the fall of 2002.  He has led discussions on these topics in churches in Indiana and Ohio.  Evans maintains membership in the National Association of Biology Teachers and serves as treasurer of the Indiana College Biology Teachers Association.  He has published medical research articles in Peptides, Cell and Tissue Research, and Journal of Experimental Biology, and has recently pursued research interests in the area of cognitive illusions.

Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations. U.S.News & World Report ranks Huntington among the best colleges in the Midwest. The University is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and in 2004 was named one of the 50 best Christian places to work by Christianity Today magazine.
