DeYoung, Posegate honored with theatre arts awards

FOR RELEASE May 4, 2006

Huntington, Ind.—Two Huntington University theatre students were honored at Huntington University’s annual Forester Night with the Barnabas-Tabitha award.  The award is given to up to two theatre students who display a servant’s heart throughout the year and who “go the extra mile” in and out of productions.

Brad DeYoung

This year’s Barnabas award went to Brad DeYoung, a sophomore theatre design and technology major from Lansing, Ill., and the Tabitha award was given to Rebekah Posegate, a freshman theatre education major from Lake Villa, Ill.

The names for the award come from the book of Acts. Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement,” is found in Acts 4:36: “There was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas.” The name Tabitha comes from Acts 9:36: “In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha who was always doing good and helping the poor.”

Rebekah Posegate

Mike Burnett, assistant professor of theatre arts, praised both DeYoung and Posegate for their positive attitudes and effort throughout the year.

“Brad is a leader in the scene shop, serving as electricians’ foreman,” he said. “He has also been either a designer or assistant designer for all the productions this year. His lighting design for ‘The House of Bernarda Alba’ was singled out as being one of high caliber. He always volunteers his time and energy to assist other students in their production work and keeps a good attitude in his work.”

“Bekah has worked on every major production this year, both backstage and onstage, including the title role in ‘The House of Bernarda Alba,’” Burnett added. “She has proven herself as a leader in the department, both in production and in coursework. Her attitude and abilities are ones that are positive and encouraging to others.”

DeYoung and Posegate will each receive a $50 award to be used towards the purchase of scripts or theatre texts.
