Huntington, Taylor collaborate for bike ride benefit

FOR RELEASE April 24, 2006

Huntington, Ind.—The Acting on AIDS chapters of Huntington University and Taylor University have teamed up to present “The Bike Ride Benefit for AIDS Relief.” Students from both Universities will ride the 32-mile route from Huntington to Taylor on Sunday, April 30, 2006. Students will leave Huntington at 2 p.m. from the Huntington Union Building.

Suggested donation per rider is $5. All proceeds go to the AIDS Task Force of Northeast Indiana.

The idea for a bike ride came from 2005 Huntington graduate Joanna Shenk.

“Last year my sister who attends Taylor and I decided we wanted to ride our bikes from Huntington to Taylor, just to say we did it,” said Shenk. “We invited a few friends to ride with us and had a great time. Afterwards we thought it would be really great to get more people involved and use the bike ride as a way to raise money.”

Shenk and her sister then contacted the Acting on AIDS groups on the Huntington and Taylor campuses.

“Both groups were excited about promoting the bike ride,” added Shenk. “For the most part, this bike ride is just about doing something fun and raising money for people who need it.”

The Huntington University chapter of Acting on AIDS, a World Vision initiative, was founded last spring after University students attended a student AIDS summit at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. Since then, the group has been active in pursuing what can be done globally, locally and on campus to raise awareness about the AIDS crisis.

For more information about the bike ride benefit, contact organizers Beth Warblow, a sophomore social work major from Byron Center, Mich.; Ryan Darr, a senior mathematics major from Adrian, Mich.; and Joanna Shenk, a 2005 graduate from Goshen, Ind.
