University awards Presidential Scholarships

Huntington, Ind.—More than 50
individuals were awarded a Presidential Scholarship of $7,000 during the
fifth annual Huntington University Presidential Scholar Celebration Day on
February 10, 2006. In addition, 21 of those students received an additional Colloquium
Scholarship of $1,500. The Presidential and Colloquium Scholarships at
Huntington University are the highest honors bestowed on an incoming student.
Academic criteria for the Presidential
Scholarship
are a 3.6 grade point average and either a 1250 SAT or 28 ACT score. The
additional Colloquium Scholarship is awarded to students who achieve a 1320 SAT or
31 ACT score. The scholarships can be retained by qualifying students all four
years at Huntington University.
The Celebration Day allowed the scholars and
their families the opportunity to hear more about what is offered at
Huntington for high achieving students from a number of sources within their
chosen academic divisions. Current Presidential Scholar students, recent
alumni, faculty and staff members offered insights to the high academic
programs and enriching student life that Huntington University offers.
During the Presidential Scholar Luncheon, each recipient was introduced and
recognized with a certificate presented by Dr. G. Blair Dowden, president of
the University, and Dr. Norris Friesen, vice president and dean of the
University. The following individuals were named Presidential Scholars and
will receive a scholarship of $7,000 (* denotes individuals who received the
additional Colloquium Scholarship).
Logan Amstutz
Amstutz is from New Haven, Ind.,
where he attends New Haven High School. He will pursue a major in Bible and
religion in the fall and plans to become a youth pastor and a professional
writer with a focus on fictional novels. Amstutz has been involved with
academic Super Bowl, Spell Bowl, and Latin Club.
Janel Anderson
Anderson is from Brownsburg, Ind.,
and attends Bethesda Christian School. There, she has been involved in band,
choir, cheerleading as well as a mission trip to Louisiana. Anderson has
plans of pursuing a psychology degree with hopes of becoming a criminal
psychologist.
Matt Austin*
Planning to pursue his interests in
music and theatre in the fall, Austin is from Wheaton, Ill., and attends
Wheaton North High School. He is involved in National Honor Society, student
council, speech team as well as school musicals and theatre productions.
Claire Bates*
From Bloomfield, Mich., is Bates
who attends Andover High School. She has been involved throughout her high
school career by participating in the Forensics team, peer mentoring,
worship team at church, and also has received a Science Department Scholar
Award and was a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Bates hopes to pursue her
interests in education, psychology and missions while in college.
Kelly Beiswanger*
From Kendallville, Ind., is
Beiswanger who is active in her high school with National Honor Society,
show choir, and freshman mentoring. She attends East Noble High School and
will pursue a degree in English in the fall.
Jamie Burridge
Burridge is from Fort Wayne, Ind.,
and hopes to pursue a degree in communication with an emphasis in
broadcasting. Burridge attends Concordia Lutheran High and has been involved
in drill team, Adventure Training, and National Honor Society. She hopes to
one day start up a Christian radio station.
Matt Cable
Born in
Kansas, Cable now resides in North Manchester, Ind.,
where he attends Manchester High School. He is involved in Campus Life as a
student leader, tennis team, and youth group. Cable also had a unique
opportunity to travel to Sweden last year as an exchange student. He plans
to pursue a degree in youth ministry.
Sarah Caley
Byron Center, Mich.,
is home to Caley who attends Byron Center High School. She has an interest
in pursuing a business degree while in college.
As a high school student she has been involved in National Honor Society,
Vocal Expressions, Student Council, Community Service Club as secretary, and
three of the school’s musicals.
Nathan Capriglione
Attending DeKalb High
School and from Auburn, Ind., is
Capriglione who is interested in theatre design
and technology. He participates in Key Club, Science Club, Spell Bowl,
Speech Team, National Honor Society, and theatre productions.
Sarah Cherry
Cherry is from Huntington, Ind., and attends Huntington North High School.
There she is involved in tennis team, concert band, pep band, National Honor
Society, and Campus Life. Cherry has received an award in state and district
Indiana State School Music Association competitions in oboe and also is
involved in her church orchestra. Cherry would like to pursue a career in
pharmacy.
Bryant Crubaugh
Crubaugh is from Fort Wayne, Ind.,
and attends Homestead High School. He would like to pursue a degree in Bible
and religion while in college with a goal to pursue ministry. In high school
he is involved in marching band, drumline, Campus Life student leaders, and
is also a lifeguard and a Boy Scout.
Megan Culbertson*
Culbertson is from Fort Wayne,
Ind., and attends Homestead High School. While in high school she has been
involved in Key Club, tutoring, Academic Superbowl, theatre, drama ministry,
and National Honor Society. Culbertson has had opportunities to travel to
Mexico and Chicago on missions trips. She will pursue a degree in
communication while in college.
Amy Deming
From Gurnee,
Ill., is Deming who has a great passion for missions. She has participated
in several mission trips to Mexico and hopes to work for a short term
missions organization some day. She is also a member of the women’s soccer
team at Warren Township High School and is a quadruplet.
Alex Desch*
From Fort Wayne, Ind., is Desch who
has received the Distinguished Honor Roll Award along with a Math Award.
Desch attends Homestead High School and participates in National Honor
Society. She will study elementary education.
Stephen Edinger*
Edinger is from Sylvania, Ohio, and
will pursue a degree in computer science. He attends Sylvania Northview High
School and has participated in youth group, Vacation Bible School, and
summer mission trips.
Spencer Elliott
From Fort Wayne, Ind., Elliott attends South Side High School and
participates in French club, chess team, theatre, speech and debate, and the
academic team. Elliott is currently undecided as to what major he would like
to pursue, but he has an interest in pre-law and secondary education with a
minor in theater.
Kelsey First
Interested in pursuing a degree in
special education is First who is from Spring Lake, Mich. She attends Spring
Lake High School and has been involved in student council, National Honor
Society, golf, soccer, and is the editor for the school’s newspaper. First
is also a student leader for her church’s youth group.
Joshua Fitzgerald*
Fitzgerald is from New Haven High
School in New Haven, Ind. He is active in Youth for Christ Campus Life
student leaders at his high school. He hopes to pursue his interests in math
education while in college.
Emily Forbes
Attending Homestead Senior High
School is Forbes who resides in Fort Wayne, Ind. She has participated in
marching band for the past four years and is a member of the National Honor
Society and distinguished Honor Roll. Forbes is currently undecided in her
major but has an interest in pre-med.
Valorie Freeland
Freeland
is from Andrews, Ind., where she is a homeschooled student. She has an
interest in pursuing computer science as a college student and is an active
member in her church. Freeland has participated in Teen Bible quizzing, is
the church’s nursery assistant, member of teen choir, and assists with
Vacation Bible School. She is also a member of the Huntington Eagles Varsity
Volleyball team and the American Sign Language Club.
Jarod Hammel
From Andrews, Ind., is Hammel who
attends Huntington North High School. Hammel is a National Leadership Merit
Award recipient and a high honor roll member. He also participates in 4-H
and baseball. Hammel will study math education in the fall.
Anna Hawley*
From Huntington, Ind., is Hawley
who attends Huntington North High School. She would like to pursue her
interests in psychology and missions while in college. She is involved in
drama, Varsity Singers show choir, and is also a freshman mentor and class
secretary.
John Haynes
Haynes is a senior attending Palatine High School, and he is from Palatine,
Ill. He has a passion for serving youth and displays this through his
involvement in the church worship band as a youth group student leader and
with his interests to pursue a degree in ministry and missions while in
college.
Nathan Hunt*
From Creswell, Ore., is Hunt who as
a homeschooler has received the Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction
Award along with a National Merit Award. He has participated in a
Shakespearean drama class and is also the editor for the local high school’s
newspaper. Hunt will pursue a degree in English and hopes to become an
editor.
Mary Hutchens
Attending Otsego Baptist Academy
is Hutchens who is from Otsego, Mich. She has an interest in theatre and
will major in theatre performance in college. She has participated in drama
team, varsity soccer, basketball, volleyball, youth group and is currently
taking voice lessons.
Ryan Imel*
Imel is from Roanoke, Ind., and
attends Huntington North High School. Pursuing his interests in Bible and
religion, Imel is currently undecided in his major of choice. While in high
school he has been involved in National Honor society and is the newspaper
editor.
Melissa Keighin*
Keighin is from Carlock, Ill., and
attends Normal Community High School. She has a range of involvements from
Key Club, Students Against Drunk Driving, National Honor Society, and
Illinois Math League to Awana, youth group, and cheerleading. Keighin hopes
to pursue a degree in history education.
Amber Kessler*
Kessler is from Moscow, Russia. She
attends Hinkson Christian Academy and is involved in Beta Club and overseas
ministry. She would like to one day use her youth ministry degree and work
with children in developing countries.
Bradley King*
Pursuing his interests in chemistry
at college and from Bellefontaine, Ohio, is King who attends Salem High
School. He has had the opportunity to participate in several different
missions trips including Russia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. He participates in
marching band, worship band and plays the piano, guitar, and xylophone.
Jennifer Kratz*
With an interest in English and
writing is Kratz who is from East Greenville, Pa. She attends Upper
Perkiomen High School and is involved in choir, newspaper, foreign language
club, student council, National Honor Society, drama club, worship team, and
soccer.
David Lash*
Lash is from Mentone, Ind., where
he is a senior at Tippecanoe Valley High School. He participates on the
basketball team there along with National Honor Society, Future Farmers of
America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and 4-H. Lash will pursue a
degree in business management in college.
Caitlynn Lowe
From Bedford, Ohio, is Lowe who has
an interest in pursuing a degree in digital media arts. She attends Bedford
High School and is involved in Students Against Drunk Driving, National
Honor Society, and has volunteered as an office helper as well as a
retirement center aide teaching computers. Lowe has a goal of owning her own
animation studio one day.
Leslie Malkemus
A senior this year at Hagerstown
High School is Malkemus who will pursue her interests in psychology while in
college. She is from Hagerstown, Ind. and is involved in Student Government
Association, Spanish club, National Honor Society as well as marching, pep
and concert band.
Allison Menser*
Menser is from Plymouth, Ind.,
and attends Plymouth High School. She is involved in swing choir, National
Honor Society, and Spanish Club. While in college, she will pursue her
interests in accounting.
Stephen Milliken
From
Franklintown, Pa., is Milliken who attends Dillsburg Northern High School.
There he is actively involved in choir, tennis, soccer, track, as well as
dramas and musical productions. He is undecided as to what major he will
pursue but is excited about spiritual growth and service opportunities while
in college.
Victor Morman*
Morman is a homeschooled student
from Monroeville, Ind., who has a goal of one day becoming a concert
pianist. He has played the piano for the last nine years and is the music
director for a quintet. He also enjoys soccer and has participated on a
travel soccer team.
Tory Nelson
Nelson is from Granger, Ind. He is
a senior at Clay High School. There, he is
involved in drama club, National Honor Society, and Spain Society. While in
college Nelson would like to study digital media arts in animation with a
goal of one day filming and editing movies.
Thom Newell
Pursuing a degree in psychology is
Newell who is from Greentown, Ind. He attends Indiana Academy and
participates in Students Against Drunk Driving, track and field, student
parliament, and yearbook. He was voted best yearbook photographer. He also
has involvements in organizations such as Fire Shaq and U-Turn.
Peter Owens
Owens is from
Indianapolis, Ind., and he attends Covenant Christian High School. He will
pursue a degree in history education while in college and has interests in
baseball, basketball, and music.
Corey Palmer*
Coming to Huntington
from Sharpsville, Ind., is Palmer who attends Tri-Central High School. He
has an interest in studying communication while in college with a possible
emphasis in public relations. In high school he is involved in Fellowship of
Christian Athletes, 4-H, football, golf, track, National Honor Society,
Spanish club, and Academic Super Bowl.
Amos Rawley
Rawley is from
Greencastle, Pa., and attends Greencastle Antrim High. He is involved in
choir, youth group, Boys Scouts and has interests in music and theatre.
Rawley will pursue a degree in youth ministry and hopes to become a youth
pastor.
Jessica Rhode
Rhode is from
Okinawa, Japan. There she attends Okinawa Christian and is involved in
volleyball, student government, National Honor Society, chapel worship team,
choir, and drama. Rhode hopes to pursue a degree in secondary education.
Justine Salway
Currently participating in Spanish
club, show choir, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society,
and the worship band at her church is Salway who is from Huntertown, Ind.
She attends Carroll High and is interested in business and pre-law. She
hopes to one day become a criminal lawyer.
Kristin Schott
Pursuing her
interests in music and possibly worship leadership is Schott who resides in
Indianapolis, Ind., and attends Southport High School. There she has been
involved in her school’s musicals and hopes to participate in music
ensembles and productions in college. Schott also is excited about the
opportunities to do missions work locally and globally.
Courtney Schwerin
From Flanagan, Ill.,
is Schwerin who will pursue an interest in graphic design while in college.
She attends Flanagan High School and participates in gymnastics, golf,
softball, student council, and National Honor Society.
Melody Stauffer
Stauffer is from Irwin, Ohio,
where she attends Fairbanks High School. She hopes to one day become a music
teacher and will study music education in the fall. Stauffer also has
interests in band, choir, newspaper, yearbook, drama, and music ensembles.
Amanda Stout
Stout is from Goshen,
Ind., and attends Northridge High School. She has participated in
basketball, track, and National Honor Society throughout her high school
career. She is undecided in her major but has interests in accounting,
sciences, and computers.
Tabitha Truax*
Attending Owen Valley
High School is Truax who is from Spencer, Ind. She has been involved in
volleyball, softball, and basketball while in high school and is considering
a degree in film studies while in college.
Kelly Van Schouwen*
Van Schouwen is from
South Holland, Ill., where she attends Illiana Christian High School. She
participates in wind ensemble, pep band, orchestra, and has received awards
for High Honor Roll, Outstanding Academic Achievement, and National Honor
Society. She will pursue her interest
in Bible and religion in the fall.
Laura Waltz
Having an interest in
forensics, Waltz will pursue a degree in biology. She was born in Michigan
but now resides in Carmel, Ind., and attends Heritage Christian High School.
Waltz was homeschooled until her senior year and has participated on a
traveling volleyball team and has done missions work in Costa Rica.
Ben Waterman
From Sharspville, Ind., is
Waterman who attends Tri-Central High school and has an interest in pursuing
a degree in missions. He is a member of the men’s soccer team, varsity track
team, is club president for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, member of
National Honor Society, and is active in his church. He also has had the
opportunity to travel on numerous missions trips.
Monica Wolfe
Wolfe is from Lincoln, Neb., and attends Lincoln East High School where she
participates in soccer and National Honor Society. She also enjoys reading,
biking, and running. Wolfe will pursue a degree in biology with a dream of
becoming a zookeeper or wildlife biologist some day.
Ben Wulpi*
Wulpi is from Fort
Wayne, Ind., and attends Leo Junior/Senior High School. He has an interest
in becoming a pastor one day, and he is considering a degree in sociology.
He has participated in band, soccer, choir, and National Honor Society while
in high school.
Courtney Clark
As a
senior attending Mount Vernon High School, Clark is from Greenfield, Ind.
She has several interests to pursue while in college including theatre,
music and missions.
Kristin Colman
Born in
Lansing, Mich., is Colman who now resides in Shawnee, Okla., and attends
Shawnee Senior High School. She is an active member of National Honor
Society, color guard, concert band, Academic Team, National Forensics League
and has received recognition as a National Merit Semifinalist and Who’s Who
Among American High School Students award. She will pursue her interest in
business management in the fall.
Julie Johnson
Johnson
is a missionary kid from Japan who has a passion for teaching young minds.
She has been involved in drama, hand bell ensemble, National Honor Society,
Volleyball and Speech Festival. Johnson will pursue a degree in elementary
education.
Colleen King
As a
senior attending Robert C. Byrd High School is King who is from Clarksburg,
W.V. King is involved in theatre, Students Against Drunk Driving, student
council and has traveled to Haiti several times on mission trips. She has
interests in puppetry, foreign languages and missions. She will pursue a
degree in digital media arts while in college.
Joseph Kohut
From
Columbia City, Ind., is Kohut who attends Columbia City High School. He has
an interest in studying math education while in college and has had the
opportunity to be a part of the track and field team while in high school.
He hopes to continue his participation on the track team in college.
Abram Janson
Planning to pursue his interests in recreation
and sports ministry is Janson who is from Parma, Mich. He attends Jackson
County Western High School where has been involved in soccer, baseball, and
basketball for the last four years. He also is a member of National Honor
Society, Hope Mentoring, and the ministry team at his church.
Stephanie Mathis
Mathis
is from Danville, Ill., and attends Bismarck-Henning High School. She
participates in National Honor Society, student council, letterman’s club,
Students Against Drunk Driving, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and
volleyball. She also has had the opportunity to do missions work in North
Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. She will pursue a degree in math
education.
Emily Minard
From Readlyn, Iowa, is Minard who
attends Waverly-Shell Rock High School. She is currently undecided as to
what major she will pursue but has interests in both pre-med and fine arts.
Minard enjoys painting as well.
Jimmy Murray
With interests in digital media
arts, journalism, communication and business is Murray who is from
Mundelein, Ill. He is a senior at Carmel High School and participates in
student council, National Honor Society and is a snowboarding instructor for
children with disabilities and teens for the Chicago Rehabilitation
Institute.
Jessica Niekamp
Niekamp
is from New Bremen, Ohio, where she attends New Bremen High School. There,
she is involved in drama club and choir and has performed several vocal
solos. Niekamp has a dream of one day becoming a high school English teacher
and will pursue a degree in English education.
Teresa Nussbaum
Monroe,
Ind., is home to Nussbaum who attends Adams Central High School. Nussbaum is
currently undecided as to what major she will pursue but has interests in
both elementary education and photography. She has participated in National
Honor Society, swing choir, and is a Rotary Scholar and publications
photographer.
Alison Shellhaas
Active throughout her high school
career is Shellhaas who is from Solon, Ohio. She has had involvements in
Thespian Society, ballet, jazz, show choir, concert choir, speech & debate
team, French club and German club. Shellhaas attends Cuyahoga Valley
Christian and also has traveled to Haiti. She will pursue a degree in
intermediate education.
Nick Yarger
Pursuing his interest in both
pre-med and worship leadership is Yarger who is from Huntington, Ind. He
hopes to one day become a cardiologist or worship pastor. He attends
Huntington North High School and has been involved in Varsity Singers for
last four years.
Huntington University is a comprehensive
