Wright, Miller receive Servant Leadership Award

FOR RELEASE May 24, 2006

Huntington, Ind.—Laura Wright and Katie Miller recently were presented with the Servant Leadership Award from Huntington University.

Wright, a junior elementary education major from Muncie, Ind., participates in Huntington Kid’s Club, Bingo Buddies, Love Church, Angel Worx, Habitat for Humanity and Alpha Gamma Pi.  In addition, she is the children’s choir director at Huntington Baptist Church, a tutor for the University’s Leaning Center and an assistant in Huntington’s computer lab.  Her parents are Mark and Mary Wright.

Wright was nominated by Andrew Stahl, the public relations coordinator for the University’s Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service.

Miller, a junior family and children’s ministry major from New Bremen, Ohio, was nominated by Jenny Pettit, student director for the Joe Mertz Center.  Miller is involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters Lunch Buddies and Bingo Buddies.  She is also a campus ministry coordinator and a student worker for the maintenance department.  In addition, she has gone on spring break mission trips to Jamaica and Florida.  Her parents are Daniel and Debbie Miller.

The purpose of the annual award is to recognize students who have demonstrated leadership in the areas of community and ministry service.  The aim of this award is to promote the ideals of servant leadership in the Huntington University community.

Huntington University staff, faculty and students were asked to nominate students who consistently demonstrate a servant’s heart of leadership on campus and/or the greater community.  Candidates were then asked to complete a biographical profile.  A selection committee of an administrator, staff and student select two recipients.

In partnership with the Barney II and Moore Foundations, Huntington University established the Servant Leadership Award in 2000.  Only juniors with a 2.5 grade point average or above are eligible for consideration.  Two $1000 awards are granted.  Recipients are awarded $750 and asked to designate $250 to the charity of their choice.

Wright chose to donate $250 to Huntington Kid’s Club, an outreach program to unchurched 8 to 12 year olds in the Huntington Community.  Miller gave $250 to Angel Tree Prison Fellowship.
