HUNTINGTON, IN—For over a decade, U.S.News & World Report has consistently ranked Huntington University as one of the nation’s best comprehensive colleges in the Midwest. The magazine’s 2006 guide to America’s Best Colleges is no exception. For the 11th consecutive year, Huntington University has earned a spot among the nation’s best.  This year’s annual collegiate rankings listed Huntington as 15th among 107 institutions in the Midwest Comprehensive Colleges category and third among the Indiana schools listed in the same group.

One of the nation's top Christian colleges, Huntington offers over 70 academic concentrations, including seven new degree programs that were launched during the past year. The new programs include a master’s degree in education and bachelor’s degrees in digital media arts, economics and finance, political studies, social work, sports ministry, and worship leadership.

“The U.S.News & World Report ranking is another indicator of our commitment to the integration of Christian faith and scholarship and service,” said Dr. Norris Friesen, vice president and dean of the University. “Coupled with a number of already strong, affluent programs, we have expanded our academic rigors in several areas. I am confident that our new programs, along with our new and existing faculty, will have a significant impact on the academic mission of the university.”

To rank schools, U.S.News first organizes colleges and universities by category and then ranks them within each group. Rankings are based on a wide range of criteria, including academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

In Indiana, St. Mary’s College and Taylor University were ranked first and third, respectively, in the Midwest Comprehensive Colleges category. Following Huntington, Franklin College, Manchester College, St. Mary’s-of-the-Woods College, Bethel College, St. Joseph’s College, and Tri-State University were also listed in the top tier.

Classes begin for Huntington University students on August 29, 2005. The 2005-06 school year marks the first year for the institution’s name change from Huntington College to Huntington University.

All U.S.News rankings will appear on the magazine’s web site (www.USNews.com) on Friday, August 19. College-bound students can use the site to search for colleges and universities according to their own interests, fill out interactive worksheets and search for scholarship and financial aid information. The America’s Best Colleges newsstand book and the weekly edition of U.S.News & World Report magazine (containing many of the rankings) will both go on sale Monday, August 22.

Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations. U.S.News & World Report ranks Huntington among the top comprehensive colleges in the Midwest. Founded in 1897 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Huntington University is located on a contemporary, lakeside campus in northeast Indiana.
