Huntington's Band Clinic to conclude with free concert

HUNTINGTON, IN—The Huntington University Music Department is now accepting registrations for BandFest 2007, the 27th annual Band Clinic, to be held March 3-4.

The Band Clinic is open to instrumentalists from grades 8 to 12, college and the community who desire an opportunity to perform challenging band music, to work with guest conductors and to experience Huntington University. Clinic participants will receive small group instruction on their primary instrument from qualified professional musicians with the Air National Guard Band of the Great Lakes, 555th Air Force Band from Swanton, Ohio, during the intensive rehearsals and clinic sessions held March 3.  

The guest conductor for the Band Clinic is Staff Sgt. Haley Armstrong, the deputy commander of the 555th Air Force Band and a master’s degree candidate in instrumental conducting at Indiana University.

BandFest 2007 will feature masterworks of wind band literature. Some of the works include “Army of the Nile” by Kenneth Alford, “Variations on a Korean Folksong” by John Barnes Chance, “First Suite in E flat for Military Band” by Gustav Holst, “Circus Days” by Karl King, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams and “October” by Eric Whitacre.

A Grand Concert will be performed in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on the campus of Huntington University at 2 p.m. on March 4.  The concert will feature the Air National Guard Band of the Great Lakes, 555th Air Force Band and the combined clinic band.  The concert is open to the public, and admission is free; however, tickets are required. Contact the Merillat Centre for the Arts Box Office at (260) 359-4261 for free tickets.

To register for the Band Clinic, visit the Web site www.huntington.edu/music/bandclinic, print out the registration form and return it with the $20 registration fee to Huntington University Band Clinic, 2303 College Ave., Huntington, IN 46750. Participants also may stop in the university’s music office and register or call (260) 359-4262 for more information.
