Smelser, Vivas named Forester Athletes of Week

HUNTINGTON, IN—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of October 1-7, 2007. Women’s volleyball sophomore Brittney Smelser and men’s tennis sophomore Gonzalo Vivas earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.

Brittney Smelser, a business management major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), helped lead Huntington to a 2-0 record for the week. Smelser led the team in kills in both matches with 15 against Marian and 25 against Goshen including the game-winning putdown in the Foresters’ dramatic come-from-behind win. Smelser is leading the team with her 4.1 kills per game and 66 aces on the year. The Foresters next travel to Bethel College on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.

Gonzalo Vivas

Gonzalo Vivas, a business management major from Lima, Peru, had a strong performance on the tennis courts during the week. He won five of his six matches during the week. Vivas was one of just two winners against Indiana Wesleyan with his 6-4, 6-3 win at #2 singles. Against Franklin College, he teamed with Adam Widener for the 8-2 win at #1 doubles and he got the easy 6-2, 6-0 win in singles. In the Indiana Southeast match, Vivas and Widener were 8-1 winners at #2 doubles and Vivas won 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 in singles. The Foresters (6-7) conclude their fall season this week at the Mid-Central Conference Tournament on Oct. 11-13.
