Global Vision to sponsor Global Opportunities Week

FOR RELEASE February 20, 2008

Dr. David Livermore

HUNTINGTON, IN—Huntington University’s student missions organization, Global Vision, will sponsor Global Opportunities Week on Feb. 26-28.

The public is invited to attend an ice cream social at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Norm’s Place in the upper level of the Huntington Union Building and a chapel service at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Missionaries and mission agency representatives will be on hand at the ice cream social to answer questions. Good Humor-Breyers® Ice Cream in Huntington donated the ice cream, and Sodexho Dining Services donated the toppings.

The chapel service will feature speaker Dr. Dave Livermore, the executive director of the Global Learning Center at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. In addition, Livermore is co-founder of Intersect, a ministry that provides leadership training and consulting to emerging leaders in ministries around the world. Livermore is widely published on youth ministry, missions and issues of contextualizing the gospel. His most recent book, “Serving with Eyes Wide Open,” was awarded the 2006 Mission Book of the Year from Outreach Magazine. Livermore serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Master of Arts program in youth ministry leadership in Huntington University's Graduate School of Christian Ministries.

In his presentation titled, “Small World. Big Church,” Livermore will share an overview of some of the issues facing the world, some of the excitement going on in the church, and suggest how that should shape how people engage in missions.

At 8 p.m. Feb. 27 in the upper level of Habecker Dining Commons, Livermore will host a seminar about missions, highlighting the main points of his book “Serving with Eyes Wide Open.” Local pastors and the general public are invited to attend. Livermore will have copies of his book on hand for purchase.

There is no admission charge for the ice cream social, chapel service or seminar.

Students, faculty and staff will participate in three additional chapel services. At 10 a.m. Feb. 26, the Rev. Bill Fisher, dean of Christian faith and life, and Dr. Luke Fetters, associate professor of ministry and missions, will give an introduction to the week. They also will examine why Huntington University encourages short-term missions and whether missions are done correctly.

At 11 a.m. Feb. 27, Jeff Bleijerveld, director of global ministries for the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, will speak.

At 10 a.m. Feb. 28, Livermore will present “Created for Mission,” demonstrating from Scripture that God has created all people for missions and casting a vision for students, regardless of their major, to see how they can use their area of passion and skills in local or global missions.

Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations.
