Kock signs contract to play professional basketball

FOR RELEASE September 7, 2007

Alex Kock

HUNTINGTON, IN—Alex Kock, a 2007 Huntington University alumnus, has signed a contract to play professional basketball for BC Mess, a team in Luxemburg. This is the first time a former Forester has been signed to a professional team.

Thursday, Kock, a native of Auburn, Ind., and graduate of DeKalb High School, committed to play for BC Mess through April 17. He leaves Saturday for Europe.

“He’s very deserving of the opportunity to play professionally because he’s worked so hard,” said Steve Platt, head coach of the men’s basketball team at Huntington. “He is a very self-motivated individual. His legacy at Huntington University will run for many, many years. Lots of people appreciate what he’s stood for in the classroom and on the floor. Our returning players, especially, will remember what he taught them for years to come.”

Kock said he always wanted to play at least one year of professional basketball after his college career ended. He’s also looking forward to seeing other parts of the world through this experience.

As a forward, Kock played at Wright State University his freshman year and his remaining three years at Huntington. In 2007, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics named him Division II National Player of the Year, the first time a Forester had earned that honor. The Mid-Central Conference tapped him as Player of the Year for three consecutive years. He was named to the NAIA’s First Team All-American as a junior and senior and Second Team All-American his sophomore year. He made the MCC All-Conference Team his sophomore, junior and senior years.

As a senior, Kock led the Foresters with an average of 23.4 points and 10 rebounds per game. He shot 55 percent from the field, 45 percent from behind the arc and 84 percent from the free-throw line. He racked up 796 points during his college career. In 2006, he was part of the NAIA Division II men’s basketball championship runner-up team from Huntington.

Kock believes he is prepared to tackle the challenge of professional basketball.

“As a team, we had a successful career at Huntington, so that always helps,” he said. “Good teammates and coaches helped me with improving my skills.”
