Benedict, LeMar headline 'Attributes of Earth' exhibit

FOR RELEASE January 21, 2008

"Woven Wreath" by Grace Benedict (2007, colored pencil, 6' X 4')

HUNTINGTON, IN—Huntington University’s Robert E. Wilson Gallery will showcase artists Grace Benedict and Linda LeMar in the exhibit “Attributes of the Earth: Drawings and Ceramic Sculpture” from Feb. 4-28.

This exhibit will feature drawings by Benedict and ceramic work by LeMar, both of whom are from Lafayette, Ind.

An artists’ reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9.

Grace Benedict began working with color pencils from a very early age when she filled in the squares of graph paper to create different color patterns. Her drawings have evolved to a level of heightened detail and color use. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, in 1977, and her graduate studies in drawing and painting at Tulane University in 1979.

She continues to explore the spontaneity of drawing from life, abstracting and inventing form, as well as pursuing a fully descriptive visual statement. Her focus on nature lends itself to a variety of media, including chalk pastel, charcoal, graphite, watercolor and ink. She has lived in Lafayette for seven years and has taught drawing and design at Purdue University in the Visual and Performing Arts Department since her arrival.

"Orchids Were Her Favorite" by Linda LeMar (2007; clay, glaze and encaustic; 11" X 17" X 12")

Linda LeMar has been a professional artist for more than 20 years. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1979, and Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 1984. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants, fellowships and artist-in-residencies.

LeMar is a founding member of Artists’ Own, an artists’ cooperative on 518 Main St. in Lafayette where she has sold sculpture and pottery since 1999.

The Robert E. Wilson Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., before and after all Merillat Centre for the Arts performances, and by appointment. For further information, call interim gallery director Barb Michel at (260) 359-4172.
