Springer, Evans receive February Peer Awards

FOR RELEASE February 11, 2008

HUNTINGTON, IN—Recipients of the Huntington University Peer Award for the month of February are Deb Springer and Dr. Bruce Evans.

Linda Taylor, alumni and church relations coordinator, passed the Peer Award to Deb Springer. Springer is library secretary and has been with the university for five years.

In recognizing Springer, Taylor said, “Deb balances many tasks in her position in the library. She takes care of ordering and checking in books and educational materials for faculty, as well as managing each department’s book budgets. She also performs all the other tasks it takes to keep the office running smoothly. Deb has a very strong work ethic and strives to please all those she comes into contact with. I admire her sweet, Christ-like attitude in all she does. I know she enjoys being a part of the Huntington University family since she is like the postman—comes to work through rain, sleet, and snow.”

Matthew Ruiz, instructor in exercise science, passed the Peer Award to Dr. Bruce Evans. Evans is professor of biology and has been with Huntington University for 16 years.

In recognizing Evans, Ruiz wrote, “Bruce was the first faculty member outside of my department to make my family and I feel welcome when we moved here in 2006. That made an immediate impression on me, and my subsequent interactions with Bruce have proved that first impression to be correct. Dr. Evans is one of the professors all of my majors get to take. Of all the comments I hear from my students about particular classes — in this case, Anatomy and Physiology, by far the most significant course in my majors’ curriculum — I know that they find Dr. Evans to be accessible and compassionate despite the difficulty of the subject matter. The students learn the material, and Bruce maintains the dignity of the learning experience and of the students themselves. It’s obvious that he values them as people and not just as commodities in the classroom. It’s because of my personal and professional admiration of Bruce that I pass the Peer Award on to him.”
