FOR RELEASE August 22, 2007

Jim Ryun

HUNTINGTON, IN—Acclaimed track-and-field star Jim Ryun will serve as the keynote speaker at a dinner hosted by the Huntington University track and field team.

The public is welcome to attend the event to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the upper level of Habecker Dining Commons. Tickets are available for $25 through the university’s Athletic Department by calling (260) 359-4212 or through Tom King, head coach of the track and field team, at (260) 359-4256.

Jim Ryun achieved national recognition as a track-and-field star as a high school student in Wichita, Kansas. In 1965, Ryun set the male high school mile record of 3:55.3 – a record that stood for 36 years. He participated in three Summer Olympic Games: 1964, 1968, and 1972, winning a silver medal in the 1500-meter run in 1968. Ryun also held the world record in the mile, 1500 meters and 880 yards.

Ryun served five terms in the U.S. Congress, representing the Second Congressional District of Kansas. He was a member of the Armed Services, Budget and Financial Services Committees.

He is the founder and president of Jim Ryun Sports, Inc., a public relations company. He also has partnered with the ReSound Hearing Aid Co., creating his own program “Sounds of Success,” aimed at helping hearing impaired children fulfill their potential.

Married in January of 1969, Jim and Anne Ryun live in Lawrence, Kansas. They have four adult children and six grandchildren.

He is the author of two books, “The Courage to Run” and “Heroes Among Us.” Through 60 devotional readings in “The Courage to Run,” Ryun and his sons and co-authors provide practical principles to live by to help readers navigate life’s challenges.

In “Heroes Among Us,” Ryun shares several stories of quiet historical heroes who have been largely ignored by popular culture.
