Huntington graduate's investiture to be held Oct. 2

Judge Calvin Hawkins

HUNTINGTON, IN—The investiture for Gary resident, Calvin Hawkins, a 1967 graduate of Huntington University, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in the East Chicago Courthouse.

Hawkins will become a judge in the Civil Division of Lake County Superior Court. He will succeed Judge Robert A. Pete, who died March 6.

Huntington University President Dr. G. Blair Dowden will offer greetings while Gov. Mitch Daniels will officiate the investiture ceremony.

Hawkins was Huntington’s commencement speaker in 1998 when he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In 1975, he was named Alumnus of the Year by the university. Hawkins received the Huntington University Centennial Medallion in 1997.

He also served on the President’s Advisory Council on Excellence at his alma mater as well as on the alumni board of directors. In addition, he has taught constitutional development as an adjunct faculty member.

Hawkins has been a private attorney in Gary, specializing in civil and church litigation, bankruptcy law, probate and family law. He is a member of the Gary Police Civil Service Commission.

In addition to his undergraduate degree from Huntington University, Hawkins earned a law degree from Howard University and a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological seminary.

He is a recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Social Theology Award; Jonathan M. Daniels Fellowship Award; and the Chicago Theological Seminary Fellowship Award.
