President G. Blair Dowden presents the Coach of Character award to
Coach Tom King. |
Huntington, Ind.—Tom King, coach of Huntington University’s track and field
and cross country teams, was chosen as the 2008 Region VIII recipient of the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Coach of Character Award.
He was selected for his accomplishments as a coach as well as his character
in competitions and in the community.
Region VIII includes 11 colleges in Indiana and eight in Michigan. Indiana
schools include Bethel College, Goshen College, Grace College, Huntington
University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian College, University of Saint
Francis, Taylor University, Indiana Institute of Technology, Holy Cross
College and Indiana University Northwest.
King has been a part of Huntington University athletics since 1970 and
during his time, he has coached more than 20 All-American Scholar Athletes,
and his athletes have earned more than 40 All-American Honors. In 1999, King
was the coach that led the men’s cross country team to the second highest
finish by any Huntington University athletic team to date, a sixth place
finish at the NAIA National Championships.
King has been nominated by his peers as the Mid-Central Conference Coach of
the Year 30 times, as the District 21 Coach seven times, as the National
Christian College Athletics Association Coach of the Year twice, and in
1995, King was nominated to be the NAIA Regional Administrator of the Year.
"Tom has been coaching at HU for a long time and is very deserving of such
an award,” said Gary Turner, athletic director of Huntington University. “He
is truly a man of God and high character. He not only teaches character to
his athletes, but lives it every day of his life. He exemplifies what
coaching at HU is all about. Coach King's athletes are better people when
they leave HU because of him."
