Huntington announces math competition winners FOR RELEASE April 24, 2008
HUNTINGTON, IN—On April 23, Huntington University held its second annual Middle Grades Math Competition. This was largest of all the competitions to date, including high school. The competition was held in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Center for the Arts on the Huntington University campus. There were 128 sixth through eighth grade participants. The students competed in three rounds: a written test, an individual quick-answer round and a team round. Scores were tallied for each team and each individual.
After a three-way tie breaker for first place, the placing contestants were Alek Jansen, a seventh grader from Edgewood Middle School, in first place; followed by Preston Miller, an eighth grader from Concord Junior High School, who in second place; and finally, Frank Dush, an eighth grader from Milford School, in third place. The competition is coordinated by Huntington University junior and mathematics education major Joshua Fitzgerald with supervision and assistance from Dr. Bobbi Buchholz, assistant professor of mathematical sciences, and Dr. Jeff Lehman, associate professor of computer science. Several university students provided assistance on the day of the competition.
Concord Junior High School came in first place with 685 total points; Edgewood Middle School came in second with 600 points, and Milford School came in third with 570. The 19 participating teams were
