Forester Lecture to feature local WWII photographer

Retired Sgt. William Jones

HUNTINGTON, IN—Retired Sgt. William Jones, a Huntington resident, will speak as part of  Huntington University’s Forester Lecture Series on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Jones will present his experience as a World War II photographer in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.

Jones served as an Army Air Corps aerial photographer. His low altitude photos of the damage done in Hiroshima and Nagasaki have earned his photos the rights to rest in the Smithsonian archives, as well as the National Air and Space Museum and the National Atomic Museum. They are also on display throughout the country at various museums and national airbases.

Retired Sgt. William Jones

In addition to his photographic work, Jones made his debut on the silver screen. He is featured in the documentary “Indiana Aviation Heroes” with aviation greats Amelia Earhart and Margaret Ringenberg. Jones was also in the film “Spreading Wings, playing the part of a 1937 news photographer. “Spreading Wings” was shown at the 2005 International Windsong Film Festival.

Additionally, Jones is a member of the Professional Photographers of America and served as president of the Professional Photographers of Indiana from 1984-1985. He is currently the president of the Hoosier Air Museum in Auburn, Ind., and has given his atomic bomb speech more than 250 times.
