Scally mentors high school athletes through FCA FOR RELEASE December 8, 2008 Huntington, Ind.—For most people, going to work doesn’t entail hanging out with professional athletes. But for Huntington University senior Ashley Scally’s PRIME, work leads her to the most interesting people. Scally, whose hometown is in Santa Cruz, Calif., is working for the Bay Area chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, participating in PRIME, a seven-month experience that ministry majors at Huntington University complete during the summer and fall semesters of their senior year. PRIME stands for Practical Research and Immersion through Ministry Effectiveness. FCA is a nationwide organization that ministers to athletes. “If we impact athletes, we are going to impact many people,” Scally said, “because many people look up to them and watch them. If athletes can be impacted by Christ through FCA, then they, in turn, will impact many more people.” Scally’s summer consisted of counseling at FCA sport camps in Watsonville and Santa Barbara, Calif., where she used her skills as a Huntington softball player to mentor female high school athletes. “One was a boarding school right on the beach,” said Scally, a recreation and sports ministry major. FCA has several events it holds throughout the year. The Bay Area has 10 counties with 101 cities, each having an average of eight schools. FCA has been raising money to have more FCA events in local high schools. The FCA puts on “One Way 2 Play Drug Free!” with former San Francisco 49er Guy McIntyre as the Bay Area spokesperson. In addition, the organization hosts Fellowship Day at the San Francisco Giants field where players from the Giants and the visiting team share their testimonies. This year, the organization raised funds with a golf tournament, featuring former Ohio State football star and current cornerback for the 49ers, Nate Clements, as a guest speaker. Currently, Scally is coaching a 12 and younger softball team through FCA’s programs. She has found a passion for coaching and hopes to pursue coaching opportunities in the future. “PRIME has been a good experience for me, mostly helping me figure out what I want to do in ministry” Scally said. “FCA does a really good job at what they do, and I truly respect the program.” Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations.
