Faculty, students participate in faith, history conference

FOR RELEASE November 13, 2008

HUNTINGTON, IN—A sizable delegation of students and faculty from Huntington University participated in the recent meetings of the Conference on Faith and History held at Bluffton University in Ohio, Sept. 17-20. Students attending were Jordan Binkerd, Heathyr Gill, Brandon Harnish, Christina Hernandez, Jeff Hirschy, Elizabeth Holtrop, Tim LaBarbera, Matthew Schownir, Chris Sutton, and Naomi Woods. They were accompanied by Drs. Dwight Brautigam, Paul Michelson, Tim Smith and Jeff Webb.

The theme of the conferences, which included a Student Research Conference, Sept. 17-18, and the Fall Biennial CFH conference, Sept. 18-20, was "World History and History That Changed the World." Four students presented papers at the Student Research Conference: Brandon Harnish, "The Great Deception: An Alternative View of the Great Depression," Tim LaBarbera, "Popular Conceptions of the Mid-Fourteenth Century Medieval Clergy," Matt Schownir, "Religious Toleration in Prussia under Frederick the Great," and Chris Sutton, "The Complicated Motives behind American Support of France in Indo-China 1950."  Professors Brautigam, Michelson, and Webb chaired several sessions at both conferences.

Student participation was made possible by a grant from the Ron Frank Memorial Endowment at Huntington University.

The Conference on Faith and History is the leading North American group of historians interested in the intersections of the Christian faith and history. It was founded in 1967 and its central offices have been located at Huntington University since 2004.

Dr. Michelson is secretary of the CFH; Dr. Brautigam serves as the treasurer, and Dr. Webb edits the newsletter of the organization.

The CFH holds biennial conferences dealing with faith and history, sponsors an annual session at the American Historical Association (of which it is an affiliate), and publishes a journal called Fides et Historia.  For more information concerning the Conference on Faith and History, see its website at www.huntington.edu/cfh.
