Fishers High School wins university math competition FOR RELEASE October 10, 2008
HUNTINGTON, IN—On Oct. 8, Huntington University held its annual High School Math Competition. The competition was held in Hiner Hall of the Science Hall on the Huntington University campus. There were 12 teams made up of a total of 85 ninth through 12th grade participants. The students competed in three separate rounds: a multiple-choice test, an individual quick-answer round, and a team round. Scores were tallied for each team and each individual. The high schools that competed include the following:
Fishers High School came in first place with 605 total points. St, Joseph’s High School came in second with 595 points, and Hamilton South Eastern High School came in third with 570. After a three-way tie breaker for second place, the placing individual contestants were Harrison Zhao, a junior from Fishers High School, who scored 170 points and came in first place; Ian Goller, a senior from Fishers High School, who scored 165 points and came in second place; and Brian Huang, a senior from St. Joseph’s High School, who also scored 165 points and came in third place. Team members from each winning team, the three placing individuals, and their coaches were given a trophy, a Huntington University T-shirt, and a complimentary student license of Mathematica, popular and powerful mathematical software used by many mathematicians and colleges, courtesy of Wolfram Research. The competition is coordinated by Huntington University junior Joshua Fitzgerald, a mathematics education major from New Haven, Ind., with supervision and assistance from Dr. Bobbi Buchholz, assistant professor of mathematical sciences, and Dr. Jeff Lehman, associate professor of computer science.
