Bernbaum, Millers to receive honorary degrees

FOR RELEASE April 30, 2009

Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University will award three honorary degrees during its 111th commencement exercises at 3 p.m. on May 16 in the Field House of the Merillat Complex for Physical Education and Recreation. Recipients include Dr. John A. Bernbaum as well as Robert R. and Sue E. Miller.

In addition, the university will award associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees to approximately 230 graduates.


Dr. John Bernbaum

Dr. John A. Bernbaum will be given a Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his contributions to international Christian higher education. Bernbaum, in partnership with Russian and American educators, founded the Russian-American Christian University in Moscow, Russia, in 1995 and currently serves as the university’s president. RACU’s mission, as a private faith-based university, is to equip young Russians for leadership roles in their local communities, in the marketplace, in their churches and in their nation. Bernbaum works out of the U.S. office of RACU in Wheaton, Md., and spends approximately one-third of the year in Moscow; the remaining time is spent traveling across the country sharing RACU’s mission, recruiting faculty and raising scholarship support for financially-needy Russian students.


Robert R. and Sue E. Miller

Robert R. Miller will be recognized with a Doctor of Commercial Science s degree for his entrepreneurial success and his commitment to applying Christian principles in the business world. For 38 years, he and his wife, Sue, have co-owned Essenhaus Inc. in Middlebury, Ind., a business they founded and one for which he serves as the chairman of the board. Since its opening in 1971, Essenhaus Inc. has grown, providing employment for hundreds of people and offering hearty meals and quality lodging for leisure travelers and businesspeople.


Sue E. Miller will receive a Doctor of Commercial Science degree for her accomplishments as a businesswoman, wife, mother, church member and community volunteer. She is the co-owner of Essenhaus Inc., a business that includes a restaurant, an inn and conference center, shops, and a wholesale foods store. Her nationwide church involvements include chairing the Mennonite Economic Associates board and serving on the Mennonite Church USA executive board. She has been acknowledged with the YWCA Salute to Women of Elkhart County and the Ernestine Raclen Community Award.
