FOX dance star has ties to local filmmakers

Update: On Aug. 6, Evan Kasprzak finished in third place on FOX's "So You Think You Can Dance." Kasprzak will be part of the show's live tour to be launched in the fall.

FOR RELEASE June 9, 2009

Huntington, Ind.—Evan Kasprzak, star of the award-winning Huntington University student film, “After Hours,” recently earned a spot in the top 20 for the FOX show “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Kasprzak will perform live Wednesdays at 8 p.m., beginning June 10, for a shot at the title of America’s Favorite Dancer and a cash prize.

“After Hours” stars Kasprzak and local actress Andrea Aspacher, a 2002 graduate from Carroll High School in Fort Wayne. This short film was shot in the Huntington County Courthouse and directed by Jason Eberly of Fort Wayne, produced by Alicia Bonham of Upland, and scripted by Nathan Hartman of Berne, all Huntington University students. The dance number was choreographed by Broadway dancer and Evan’s brother, Ryan Kasprzak.

The plot of “After Hours” involves a timid janitor, played by Evan Kasprzak, who secretly falls in love with a female law clerk, played by Aspacher, while cleaning a courthouse. Alone one night, he begins to dance with his mop. Suddenly, it turns into the gorgeous clerk, a figment of the janitor’s imagination. The janitor takes this dreamy opportunity to convey his feelings through dance as a modern-day Gene Kelly.

The film won the “Outstanding Work in Live Action” award at Huntington University’s Spring 2009 Digital Media Arts Showcase. “After Hours” is currently being entered in more than 15 film festivals worldwide.

Kasprzak's dance specialty is Broadway, and his hometown is West Bloomfield, Mich. The 21-year-old graduated from Wylie E. Groves High School and attends Illinois Wesleyan University. He has danced since he was six years old, and he said his most memorable dance experience was performing in a Gregory Hines tribute with Hines’ family in the audience.
