HUTC presents Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard"

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Huntington University Theatre Company brings another classic to the stage with Anton Chekhov’s brilliant last play, "The Cherry Orchard." An ensemble cast of vivid characters will entertain, challenge and provide insight into why human nature is so reluctant to change.

"The Cherry Orchard" satirically scrutinizes the interplay of social classes in early 20th century Russia. As the Tsarist rule approaches its end, Madame Ranevskaya and her bourgeois family face social and economic disintegration, yet blissfully ignore the reality that is imminent.

Huntington University sophomore Kate Smith leads the cast in her role as Madame Ranevskaya, owner of the cherry orchard. She is joined by senior Matthias Austin in his role as Yermolai Lopakhin, the gentleman interested in purchasing the cherry orchard, and many others. "The Cherry Orchard" is directed by Thom Hofrichter.

“The brilliance in Chekhov’s plays are those moments when the audience can both laugh and cry at the same time to what is happening on the stage,” Hofrichter, said.

Four performances of "The Cherry Orchard" will be presented in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts at Huntington University. Performances are Feb. 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for general admission, $10 for students and seniors, $6 for ages 13 and younger. Huntington University students may purchase tickets for $5 and HU faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $9.

For reservations, call the Merillat Centre for the Arts Box Office at 260-359-4261, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., or from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
