HUNTINGTON, IN September 5, 1997— The Huntington College Foundation will host its annual dinner on Thursday, September 25, in the Habecker Dining Commons. The special guest speaker will be Bobby Gene Plump, who at-the-buzzer hit the shot that gave tiny Milan High School the 1954 state basketball championship over the Muncie Central Bearcats. Called "the most famous shot in Indiana hoops history," the real-life event became the basis for the fictionalized movie, "Hoosiers."

"Bobby hit the ‘shot heard round the world,’" commented Gene Keady, head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers. "What he did in basketball is unique. And he’s still giving something back to the game."

Plump’s entire life has been the story of triumph over tragedy, of succeeding in spite of incredible odds. A new book, Bobby Plump: Last of the Small Town Heroes, co-authored by Marty Pieratt and Ken Honeywell, provides a detailed look at events leading up to that one amazing shot and the life that unfolded afterwards. Plump went on to succeed in collegiate and professional basketball, built a business, became a devoted husband and father, and overcame open heart surgery and the dark side of life’s struggles. In the truest sense, Bobby Plump became a winner in the game of life.

Bobby Plump will tell his own story at the Foundation’s annual dinner and also offer comments on contemporary developments in Indiana high school basketball. The public is cordially invited to attend. Reservations may be made by mailing a check or money order for $12.50 per person to the attention of Kay Schwob, Huntington College Foundation Dinner, 2303 College Avenue, Huntington, Indiana 46750. Reservations must be received by September 19, 1997. For further information, call Kay Schwob at (260) 359-4089.
