President’s
Update
November 1999
Huntington College Friends and
Family:
The Psalmist begins Psalm 107 with these words, "Give thanks to
the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Each year at
Thanksgiving, in addition to thanking God for his gracious care and
provision for my family, I thank God for leading Chris and me to
Huntington College. It is truly a privilege to serve at Huntington
College during this time in its history. God is blessing Huntington
College with high quality students, record enrollment, exceptional
faculty and staff, and beautiful facilities.
As you will read in the highlights below, the Board of Trustees
approved a resolution for Huntington College to actively pursue
enrollment goals that will see our student body grow to 1300 by 2005 and
1650 by 2010. It will take the combined effort of community leaders,
alumni, and every member of the campus community to make this vision
become a reality.
I know that you will be encouraged by the items that I have included
in this update. Please join me in thanking God for his wonderful
blessings to Huntington College.
Sincerely,
G. Blair Dowden
President
Board of Trustees

Academic
Philosophy The Emergent Self
, the latest book by Dr. William Hasker, distinguished
professor of philosophy, has been published by Cornell University
Press. In the book, Hasker joins one of the most heated debates in
analytic philosophy, the nature of the mind. Hasker begins by
mounting a compelling critique of the popular idea that the mind
is merely matter. He shows that contemporary materialism – the
attempt to explain the workings of the mind in terms of
mechanistic physics – cannot adequately explain real human
experience. He goes on to present his own theory of the mind,
recognizing the critical role of the brain and nervous system for
mental processes, but avoiding the mechanistic reductionism
characteristic of modern materialism. Dr. Hasker is also among a
group of six philosophers that has received an Initiative Grant to
Network Christian Scholars from the Council for Christian Colleges
and Universities. The stated purpose of the CCCU program is
"to enable small groups of Christian scholars to network in
ways that will lead to individual and collaborative scholarship on
focused themes of keen interest to the larger academy."
Hasker’s group will study The Metaphysics of Human Persons
and Free Will.
Communication An article by Professor
Lance D. Clark, assistant professor in communication, entitled
Online Education: Make Your Move, was featured in the
November 1999 issue of NRB, the monthly publication of the
National Religious Broadcasters.
Educational Ministries Professor
Luke S. Fetters, assistant professor of educational
ministries, led an education seminar in The People’s Republic of
China on October 26. Over 180 English teachers from Zhuhai City
Department of Education attended an afternoon in-service on the
topic of Redefining Teacher/Student Relationships in the
Subject-Centered Classroom. Prof. Fetters has had a
training/consulting relationship with school systems in southern
China since 1992. While in China, Fetters laid the groundwork for
a third English Teaching & Cultural Exchange Research
Symposium with English educators from Macau and Mainland
China.
