Community & Commercial Recreation

Students majoring in recreation management may choose to pursue an emphasis in community or commercial recreation.

Careers in community recreation may be found in both the public and non-profit segments of society.  Public recreation is represented in the governmentally supported and directed agencies on the local, state and federal levels.  Non-profit, also known as voluntary agencies are the youth serving agencies within the community.

You may have the opportunity in public recreation to work with the local, state or federal park systems in a variety of positions such as a program director, park director, or recreation director.  The non-profit or voluntary agencies serving youth in a community could include the YMCA, YWCA, Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H or religious organizations that provide recreation centers and programming.

Careers in commercial recreation may be found with any business that provides the facility for the leisure experience, the product, service or equipment to the consumer. Such businesses could include theme and amusement parks, resorts, theatres, campgrounds, professional sports, health clubs, golf courses, racquet clubs, bowling alleys, skating rinks, and outfitter stores.

At Huntington, the recreation management major will address these areas through the required core courses for the major. These courses are Private and Commercial Recreation, Community Recreation and Youth Agencies, Recreational Sports, Leadership in Recreation and Exercise Science, Business and Organizational Management, and Recreation Administration.

Students may choose to minor in business, sociology, or psychology to complement this emphasis area of recreation management.  You may also choose elective courses such as Grant Proposal Writing, Exercise Prescription, Team Sports, Athletic Training, Tumbling and Gymnastics, Rhythmics, or Business Law.

Students are encouraged to do their practicum and internship experience in one of the areas of community or commercial recreation.
