TRANSITION TO TEACHING

Some persons with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may qualify for entrance into Indiana’s Transition to Teaching program.  This program allows these qualified individuals to be prepared for an Indiana teaching license by completing additional coursework and field experiences, but without having to complete another Bachelor’s degree.   

QUALIFICATIONS 

Secondary Education 

There are three groups of people who may qualify for the Transition to Teaching program in Secondary Education:

(1)  Those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in the subject for which licensure is being sought with a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), both in  the major and overall.

(2)  Those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in the subject for which licensure is being sought with a GPA of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), both in the major and overall, and who have a minimum of 5 years work experience in a field related to the subject area.

(3)  Those who have a graduate degree in the subject for which licensure is being sought. 

 

Elementary Education 

There are two groups of people who may qualify for the Transition to Teaching program in Elementary Education:

(1)  Those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

(2)  Those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), and who have at least 5 years of work experience in an education related field.

 

ADMISSION TO THE HU PROGRAM 

I.  Submit an Application for Admission, accompanied by the following:

A. $300 evaluation and advising fee

B. Official college transcript

C. Evidence of passing scores on the state required PPST(Praxis I) tests , and for Secondary  Education candidates, passing scores on the appropriate Praxis II tests.

D. Evidence of appropriate professional experience

E. Two letters of reference which specifically recommend you for a career in teaching.

F. Evidence of ability to meet minimum content and developmental standards (See II)

 II. Meeting Content and Developmental Standards

All teacher education graduates must be able to meet state content and developmental standards. Transition to Teaching applicants must demonstrate proficiencies in all the following ways to meet application requirements.

III.  Applicant Interview 

If the applicant has met all criteria in I and II, an interview will be scheduled with two members of the Teacher Education Committee.  This is the process that all applicants to the Teacher Education Program go through, and is valuable in helping to assess dispositional issues related to teaching.

IV.  Schedule of Courses

If the applicant is accepted into the Transition to Teaching program, each will be required to successfully complete (C- or better) the following course work. Substitution for some courses may be considered to avoid repetition.

V. Portfolio Requirements 

Transition to teaching students must meet all portfolio requirements as outlined in the Education Department Student Handbook and the Student Teaching Handbook.
