Social Work Degree:  Program Features

In the Old Testament of the Bible, Micah 6:8 (NIV) states, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

The Social Work Department at Huntington University focuses on the foundational values of the social work profession which are service, justice, integrity, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, and competence. If you like people, enjoy problem-solving and have many areas of interest, this may be the major for you! Our nationally accredited social work program addresses the current needs of individuals, families, groups and communities, allowing students to be globally aware and locally active.

A social worker is expected to creatively address the broad range of human conditions and situations in such a way as to improve or restore the capacity of people to function well. It involves a holistic perspective that includes biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions. As a social work graduate, you can work with individuals, families, groups, communities or organizations in a variety of settings including health care, mental health, schools, family and children services, criminal justice, business/industry, communities, governmental agencies, churches, international service organizations, and more.

For example, our students have recently completed field experiences at:

  • Kid's Club

  • The Free Health Clinic

  • Boy's and Girl's Club

  • The Heritage Retirement Center

  • Hickory Creek Nursing Home

  • Special Services of Huntington County Community Schools

  • Habitat for Humanity

  • The Bowen Center

  • Family Centered Services

  • Pathfinder Services

  • Lutheran Hospital

  • Miller's Merry Manor

  • The Rehabilitation Hospital

  • Huntington County Council on Aging

  • United Way

One student responded, "This experience was awesome! I learned so much and I would recommend it to anyone. I learned much about the details of social work and not-for-profit organizations. I would recommend this experiential learning site a thousand times!"

This professional degree program at Huntington University will provide entry into the social work profession and the capacity to become licensed in any U.S. state. Your degree will also be recognized worldwide. Through classroom instruction, community service, global connections and several hours of field experience, you will be prepared for entry-level generalist social work practice or for the pursuit of a master’s degree in social work. You will also develop a foundation of integrating Christian faith with practice as well as personal growth and development that leads to professional identity. Your final semester will be spent in a social work setting, working under the supervision of a field instructor.
