FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
ON ROMANIAN STUDIES
June 25-28, 2007Last Updated: 14 August 2007
The Society for Romanian Studies's Fifth International Congress on Romanian Studies, June 25-28, 2007 at Ovidius University in Constanta, Romania, is, as they say, history. Over 200 participants and guests enjoyed the hospitality of the University and the stimulation of the collegial interaction, discussion, and debate with colleagues from around the world. (And a few wandered off to investigate the Black Sea sands from time to time. It was pretty hot in Constanta, though not as bad as in Bucuresti or in Western Europe and the US at the time.) We were also pleased by the large international participation (more than double that of Suceava 2001) and by the many first time participants and first time areas of study represented. This bodes well for the future. [Note: A few of the international participants did not make their congress registration payments to Jim Augerot. If your conscience prevails, why not send him the money ($40; 30 EURO) now? This does not apply to graduate students or to people from former east block countries.]
SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS?
Many people asked when and where the next congress will be. There seemed to be some dismay when it was indicated that the Sixth Congress will probably be in 2012. As for the location, we have already received a number of inquiries from sites (mostly in Transilvania). If you have any suggestions, please contact Paul Michelson.PUBLICATIONS

CONSTANTA PHOTOS
For an infomal album of events in Constanta, take a look at our Constanta Album posted here. (If you aren't pictured, sorry; our intrepid photographer couldn't be everywhere at the same time.) Some additional pictures sent in by Lavinia Stan have now been posted here. Thanks. Our many thanks to Adina Ciugureanu and her able assistants for all their work in making the congress a success. Also to Jean Michelson for coordinating the help desk and generally dealing with issues as they arose. The consensus among old timers is that this was the smoothest running of all of our five meetings. Multumim mult.
The Final Program for Constanta 2007 as finalized on June 12, is posted here as a pdf file.
