J-Term in France and Spain 2009

Profs. Todd Martin and Silvia Choi are interested in traveling with students to France and Spain next J-Term, but they need to get at least fourteen interested students by the end of the semester to begin making the arrangements.  If you are interested, contact either one of them: tmartin@huntington.edu / 4240 or schoi@huntington.edu / 4322.  The cost will be approximately $2500; we will arrange an informational meeting in the near future. The basic plan would be to travel for 12 days in France and Spain.  We would begin in Paris where we would spend 4 or 5 days visiting the city, including the Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, Les Invalide, the Eiffel Tower, the Latin Quarter, and Montmartre.  Then we would take a night train to Barcelona for 2 days where we would visit La Sagrada Familia, Montjuic Hill, Barrio Gotico, Barcelona Cathedral, and Las Ramblas.  From here we would head on Madrid for 3 days visiting Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, The Royal Palace, and the Prado.  Two of the days would be spent in transit from the US to Europe, one each way.

Room Draw 2008-09 General Information

  • Paid single rooms- There will be an allotted number of rooms in each residence hall that students can have as single rooms.  In order to get one of these rooms, you will need to pay room and a half of room charge ($2425 / semester).

  • Number Selection/Pre-Selection– Students will select a number to determine the order of room selection. The selection of room draw numbers will occur on Thursday, April 10, 2008 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM in the HUB. This process is completely random. There is no benefit in coming to the Selection Tables early in the day. Every resident student is to select a number.  If for some reason you are unable to attend room selection, you may send a signed note with a friend who can select a number for you. The highest drawn number by a student in a roommate pair is the number used for Room Draw.

  • Room Charts–will be posted in the residence halls prior to selection to indicate which rooms will be available for room draw.

  • Waiting Lists– A student’s name may appear on multiple waiting lists. If a resident places his/her name on more than one waiting list, s/he must declare which residence hall is their first preference. Once a student places his/her name on a waiting list and a space becomes available, s/he will automatically be placed in that space. S/he will not be notified prior to placement, only after. Because of this, students should be absolutely sure of their choice to be placed on a waiting list.

  • Room/Dorm Selection Students will select a room and dorm starting on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

Tuesday, April 15,2008

9:00 PM in the lower DC     Senior A & B

9:15 PM in the lower DC     Junior A & B

10:00 PM in the lower DC     Sophomore A & B

10:30 PM in the lower DC     Freshmen

  • Consolidation Period – All residents not paying the single room rate who are without a roommate in a room designed for two occupants will be consolidated with another student in a similar situation or receive a new student as a roommate.

  • Squatter’s Rights – those students who are able to claim squatter’s rights according to the room selection procedures will only be able to do so if they have roommates.

JMC Paid Positions Available

The Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service is looking for a few good people…

Do you have a heart for service?  If so, maybe you should consider a program coordinator position with the Joe Mertz Center.  We are currently looking for four students who have an interest in serving those in need, encouraging the HU community to get involved in volunteerism, and organizing specific programs through the JMC. Applications for JMC Leadership Positions are available and can be picked up in Student Services in the upper level of the HUB.  Application deadline is April 2.

* * * * *

It’s not too late to get involved!

Have you been wanting to get involved in Huntington, but don’t know where to start?  Below is some information about just a few of the things the JMC is involved with.

Adopt a Grandparent

Spend time with an elderly man or woman who at a local nursing home.  This could be things like taking them on a walk outside, playing a game, or watching television.  Visit once a week on your own schedule.

Adult Literacy

The Adult Literacy Program provides opportunities for adults in need of literacy skills and refresher basics in reading, writing and math.

Bingo Buddies

Visit and play bingo with elderly residents at a local nursing home every Wednesday night.

Boys and Girls Club

The Huntington Boys and Girls Club is open Monday – Friday 2:30 to 7:30.  It provides a safe place for youth K-12 to come, participate in games, clubs, and gym activities, get homework help, and have a free meal.  Volunteers can spend time helping in the game room, building relationships, and being a positive role model for club members.

Kid’s Club

Huntington Kid’s Club is an outreach program to unchurched 8-12 year olds in the Huntington community.  College students and adults from the community build relationships with the kids by meeting in small groups on Monday nights and once a month for an activity outside of the club.

Love Church

Love Church in Fort Wayne has a Thursday night children’s program that needs volunteers to spend time with inner-city kids.

Meal Ministry

New Life Fellowship Church in down-town Huntington serves a free meal, open to anyone, every night of the week.  Help serve the meals and get to know the people that come in.

Open Door

Deliver meals to elderly shut-ins and families in need!  Organized by St. Mary’s Catholic Church, volunteers stop by the church to pick up food and get assigned a route to which they deliver that day’s meal

Volunteer 911

This program responds to the various calls that the JMC gets from local residents and/or organizations that are in need of immediate assistance.  Volunteers will be immediately rallied to respond to the specific need.  Services range from raking leaves to babysitting to shoveling snow to running errands for the elderly, etc.

If you would like more information about a program, email: jmc@huntington.edu

We’re happy to let you know how you can get involved, or answer any questions!
