Many of you enjoyed our recent visit with Walter Wangerin, Jr., who delivered our annual Examined Christian Life lecture.  There are copies of his books in our own RichLyn Library, including Book of the Dun Cow, Book of Sorrows, Paul: A Novel, and Book of God: the Bible as a Novel.  Several of his inspirational writings are available as well. Our next speaker, Steve Monsma, author of Healing for a Broken World: Christian Perspectives on Public Policy will visit us on September 23 at 7:00 in the MCA to discuss perspectives on the election of 2008.  His book is also available on loan in the library.  See you on the 23rd! --Jeffrey Webb, Coordinator, Forester Lecture Series

 

"Faith, Family and Medicine: Thoughts from a Family Physician
4:00 PM Friday, October 3 in Hiner Hall Science building

Dr. Beau Dowden, a 1998 Huntington University alumnus, will give a presentation titled “Faith, Family and Medicine: Thoughts from a Family Physician” at 4:00 PM on Friday, Oct. 3 in Hiner Hall of the Science Hall. The seminar is part of a series titled “Christians Making a Difference in the Sciences” and is free and open to the public.  Dowden, son of Huntington University President G. Blair Dowden, is a family medicine physician in Fort Gratiot, Mich., and serves on staff at the Port Huron Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. Elective chapel credit will be given for students attending the entire session.

January Term Class in Jamaica!!!

Meeting @ Loew 268 on Tuesday, September 23rd at 4 PM

Huntington University’s psychology department is offering a J-Term class in Jamaica this January 2009.  The class will be open to about 10 Huntington University students, with the remaining students coming from Jamaica Bible College.  It is a

3-hour class that will address conflict resolution from both an academic and practical perspective.  The cost will be around $1000 - $1200.  Contact Dr. Priest (x4232) for more information.  A brief introductory meeting for those who believe that they might be interested in going will be held in Loew 268 on Tuesday, September 23rd at 4:00 PM.

Want to see the world? Want to earn college credit doing it? Every year HU students participate in the many semester abroad programs available through the Off-Campus and International Studies office. There are programs available on every continent (sans Antarctica) offering classes relevant to every major. Politics in Washington. English at Oxford. Biblical studies in Jerusalem. Visit the Florida Everglades in January!

American Environmental History, a course to be offered this J-Term, covers topics in North American natural history and ecology from the pre-Colombian period to the present, including changing patterns of land use, economic development and natural resource appropriation, changing forest and wetlands biomes, and environmental ethics.  Special attention will be given to issues in Christian environmental stewardship and creation care.  The eight-day field experience in South Florida features visits in Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, Big Cypress National Preserve, and John Penne Kamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo.  Students will engage in close study of wetlands, coastal, and marine ecologies, and so should be prepared for hiking, canoeing, snorkeling, sailing, camping, and other outdoor activities.  Cost is $375 for the trip.  Contact Prof. Jeff Webb at jwebb@huntington.edu for further details.

 

Outdoor Environmental Education
Do you want to spend a delightful January in balmy southern Michigan?  Do you want the opportunity to work with children in a residential camp setting?  Then this announcement is for you  This class runs from Friday, January 2 through Friday, January 16, 2009.  Each January, HU students spend two weeks at the Outdoor Environmental School at Camp Michindoh working in their program with fifth and sixth graders.  Cost to HU students is very low and the experience may change your life.  If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Dr. Bordeaux at ext. 4204, by email at wbordeaux@huntington.edu, or in Science Hall, room 382.    Contact him soon to reserve your spot.

The Athletic Training room is once again looking to hire some Male Athletic Trainers to work in the training room. We are looking for dependable individuals able to work afternoons, weekends, evenings and some travel. Students will eventually be assigned to a team and will need to be at that specific team’s practices and events.  Duties include getting athletes ready for practices & games, event readiness, assisting with rehabilitation / therapy, emergency first aid, CPR, & AED certified.

Live United Team Mini-Triathlon
Not a competitive event!!  This is for fun.

WHEN: Oct. 5, 2008

WHERE: Parkview Huntington Hospital

Registration starts at noon, with opening ceremonies at 1:00 PM.  This event is a three-team member triathlon, meaning one member from each team will participate in one of the three events. The biking (19 miles) and running (3.1 miles) events will start from Parkview Huntington Hospital, and the swim event (500 yards) will take place at the Huntington University pool, starting at 1:30 PM. For registration forms to print out, visit www.parkview.com, point to “Hospitals,” click on “Parkview Huntington Hospital,” click on “General Info” then click on “2008 Team Mini-Triathlon.”   The cost is $75 per team ($25 per person).  Please contact Kay Schwob, kschwob@huntington.edu if you are interested in participating but can’t afford it.  Six (6) scholarships are available!
