Shakespeare Behind Bars Prison Trip
The third annual trip to the Luther Luckett
Correctional Complex in Kentucky will occur on Tuesday,
October 27. This trip gives participants a chance to
interact with the inmates of a medium security prison as
they rehearse a Shakespeare play, discuss it with a
professor, and answer questions from students. Students may
be asked to participate with the inmates in a few
activities. Except for the cost of lunch, the trip is free.
Participants in the trip must complete a criminal background
check, watch the movie documentary about Shakespeare Behind
Bars, and read the play the inmates will be working on,
Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale. It would be helpful to have
more male students participating. Please contact
Dr. Jack Heller
for more information.

Constitution Day, September 17
This week occasions the annual celebration of
Constitution Day. In 2004, Congress passed a bill
recognizing the 17th of September as Constitution
Day and Citizenship Day, observing the date in 1787
that the 39 founders signed the U.S.
Constitution. This commemoration is a time for us to
reflect on their legacy and develop the habits of
citizenship in a new generation of Americans. HU
will observe the date in three ways. Take time
to visit the display case in the RichLyn Library
lobby. It offers a view on interesting ways that
the Constitutional tradition has been conceived and
taught in the past. Also, notice the table top
cards in the Dining Commons that have noteworthy
facts about the Constitution and its tradition of
interpretation in U.S. History. Finally, look in the
Dining Commons on Wednesday at lunch for a short
quiz on the Constitution and U.S. Citizenship; if
you complete the quiz and answer the questions
correctly, you'll be entered into a drawing for
prizes at Wednesday dinner. Below you will find some
links to websites that feature the U.S.
Constitution, its drafting, and its legacy over the
years. You are welcome to commemorate the
anniversary of the signing of the Constitution by
touring these pages and learning more about this
focal point of our national experience:
