The
CLEP and DSST (formerly called DANTES) examination programs provide opportunities for students to
earn college credit by passing standardized exams.
DSST exams are administered in the standard “paper and pencil”
manner while CLEP exams are available only in a computer based testing
format. Potential examinees must schedule an appointment during office hours (8 am to 5 pm) to take a CLEP or DSST exam. Testing will not be scheduled during periods of extreme Learning Center activity, such as the first week of a semester, or mid-term or finals weeks.
To register, mail or bring the pertinent DSST or CLEP registration form, accompanied by the appropriate fee, to the Learning Center. Please identify your first and second choice of testing appointments. We will contact you by telephone or email you to finalize the appointment if you send your registration in the mail. Please send your registration and payment at least one week before the exam date. A confirmation will be provided when the appointment is set, when time permits. Anyone who is properly registered but hasn’t received a confirmation two days prior to the exam session should contact the Learning Center before reporting on test day. Fees must be paid prior to exam day. Please note CLEP scoring fee increase effective 7-1-08. Click here for Registration deadlines, and registration forms . Checks
or money orders should be made
payable to Huntington University:
VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or bank card charges are
also accepted. However, convenience fees are applicable
for some credit card charges. Students who prefer to pay from their
student account or who require receipts are asked to make this clear at the
time of registration. Please review the Exam dates and registration deadlines
for testing fees. Students are expected to take the exam on the scheduled date unless there is an emergency. Otherwise, each time an exam is rescheduled, the student must submit the $15 service fee. Those who cancel an exam may request a refund of the scoring fee. It is important that examinees arrive on time for testing and bring a picture identification card. DSST examinees should also bring two #2 pencils. Calculators may be used for some DSST exams (Fundamentals of College Algebra, Principles of Statistics, Principles of Finance, Principles of Financial Accounting, Introduction to Computing, and Business Mathematics) and are incorporated into the computer program for selected CLEP exams. The
site for CLEP and DSST testing
is the Learning Center, which is located in Loew-Brenn Hall, room 102.
Food or drinks are not to be consumed during testing. Individuals
wishing to take CLEP exams are advised to review The
Official Handbook for the CLEP Examinations. Although the Handbook
may be purchased, it is also available to HU students on reserve in HU’s RichLyn Library. Sample tests and other information in the Handbook make it a valuable resource. CLEP
has developed a free tool, the CLEP Sampler,
to help students prepare to take CLEP on computer. It can be downloaded from
the College Board website at:
www.collegeboard.com/clep.
Also available at the CLEP site are individual subject study guides which
can be downloaded for $8 each. One of the
benefits of the CLEP computer-based testing format is that scores wil be
available as soon as students complete exams. (Be
advised that Huntington University
accepts the ACE-recommended score of 50 as the “passing” level for most,
but not all, exams. CLEP cut-off scores are printed in
Appendix 1.) Brief
DSST study guides may be obtained at
http://www.getcollegecredit.com/04learners_a.html#factsheets,
and 2 copies of the Test Preparation Guide are on 4-hour reserve in
the Richlyn Library. This resource includes study material for the Business
Math, Ethics in America, Financial Accounting, Human Resource Management,
Introduction to Business, Organizational Behavior, Personal Finance, and
Principles of Supervision exams. Some other DSST study aids are also on
reserve in the Library. See
Appendix 2
for DSST cut-off
scores. Individuals
with disabling conditions which make testing accommodations necessary must
make arrangements with the director of the Learning Center prior to taking
an exam. Additional DSST study information * Students registering for the Freshman College Composition or Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exams for HU credit must also take the accompanying 90-minute essay. CLEP charges an additional $10 for these essays. There are restrictions on scheduling these exams. FRESHMAN may take Freshman College Composition only in June, but upperclassmen and EXCEL students may take it in SEPTEMBER, DECEMBER, and MARCH also. Analyzing and Interpreting Literature will be available only during the months of October, January, April and July.
