Accessing the HU
Wireless Network
If you plan to use the wireless
network you may be able to purchase your notebook computer with wireless
technology integrated with it. If not, the wireless function is added by
using a “wireless card adapter” which fits in the PCMCIA slot or plugs into
a USB port. The wireless technology you use must meet support the IEEE
802.11b standard. Over time the university’s wireless network will be
upgraded to an 802.11g standard so it would be beneficial when purchasing an
integrated wireless adapter, a wireless card adapter, or wireless USB
adapter that it supports IEEE 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g.
Most mainline manufacturers of wireless adapters (e.g. Belkin, D-Link,
Enterasys, Microsoft, Netgear, etc.) will work with the University’s
wireless network as long as they meet 802.11b standards. However, some
manufacturers sell multiple adapters of varying quality. When considering a
specific adapter you can normally obtain an independent review and rating of
the card by going to the site www.cnet.com
and searching on the manufacturer and model number of the adapter.
Some manufacturers will claim to be able to double the wireless speed but
this normally is true only if the manufacturer of the card is the same as
the manufacturer of the network hardware (access points). The University
uses access points from several different manufacturers, and we do not
recommend paying more for a card that claims to double the speed.
Windows notebook computers
If your notebook does not have wireless technology integrated with it,
you will need to install a wireless card. The university’s bookstore sells
wireless cards that have been tested with the university’s wireless network.
The following are PCMCIA wireless adapter cards that we recommend (support
802.11b and 802.11g):
Enterasys RoamAbout 802.11
