Biographical Note
Walter Emmett Musgrave was born September 7, 1880 in Ohio. He was converted during a revival meeting at a Methodist Protestant Church in 1899. W. E. Musgrave joined the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in 1902 and received his quarterly conference license the same year. In 1903 he was received into Scioto Annual Conference. On February 6, 1904, W. E. Musgrave married Anna Yarnell, The couple would have three children. In 1906 he was ordained by the Bishop Alwood. Musgrave would serve fourteen years as pastor at various circuits and would also act as a presiding elder for five years.
Musgrave was elected as executive secretary of the Otterbein Forward Movement by the general conference and four years later in 1925 was elected Bishop. Musgrave served as Bishop for twenty four years with twelve years over the north district and twelve years over the south district. In 1949 he was elected Bishop Emeritus. He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Huntington College in 1928. Musgrave was commissioned by the church in 1945 to write a history of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ but he died on May 6, 1950 before he could complete it.
Scope Note
The W. E. Musgrave Collection contains articles written by Musgrave which appear in the Christian Conservator as well as his writings on church history and freemasonry. The bulk of the collection are handwritten sermons in notebooks. Much of the collection is not dated.
