Biographical Note
Lena Winkel was born near Elmore, Ohio in 1874. At 16 she became a teacher at Sugar Creek school near her home in Ohio. Sensing a call to the mission field Miss Winkel entered Central College (now Huntington University) in 1899 where she took up the scientific course. Before finishing her studies at Central, Miss Winkel served her first and second terms of missionary service in Sierra Leone. During this time the head of the Sierra Leone mission, Rev. B. O. Hazzard, died leaving her in charge of the mission station for several months. She returned to Huntington in 1906 to finish up her studies, finally graduating in 1907. In 1910 she again returned to Sierra Leone for her third term as a teacher at the United Brethren school in Danville. Due to declining health Miss Winkel returned to the United States in early 1913. She again took up her duties in Sierra Leone late in 1913 and served until 1916. World War I prevented her from further service in Sierra Leone. In 1920 she married Lawrence Lange in Detroit, Michigan. They moved to Toledo, Ohio were she was an active member of the Spencer United Brethren Church. Lena Winkel Lange died April 1, 1932.
