Dayton, Ohio,

August 2, 1909.

Rev. J. Howe,

Dear Brother:

I received your postal of the 31st, yesterday. I saw Mrs. Ramey to-day. She received, Friday, a letter from D. F. Wilberforce giving her the tidings of Bessey's death. Joseph and wife were there when she died. D. W. W. & wife attended the funeral, and he conducted it. They took the baby boy home north with them. D. F. W. represented that her travail was not unusual, that she thanked her midwives, smiled on her babe and suddenly sank away and died.

Our hold on Christopher may be much slackened by her death and the circumstances attending it and to follow. I have never felt so much discouragement before over our African work. I do not anticipate smooth sailing there.

For the twenty months of her employment by our Board, no doubt Bessey rendered good service. It was about as long as the usual term of service, everything considered.

Milton, my grandson here, has been sick three weeks, and is at the pivotal point between mortality and recovery. I do not wish any mention of it in the church paper. Your Brother,

Milton Wright
