John Ketner
REV. JOHN KETNER was born in Rockingham
Co., Va., November 29th, 1821, died at his home In Andrews,
Ind., October 12th, 1896, aged 74 years, 2 months and 16 days.
He with his parents moved to Preble Co., Ohio, about the year
1836. He was converted and joined the M. E. Church about 1838.
He was united in marriage with Miss Rachel Lemon in 1844. To
them were born eleven children, three of whom are still living.
He joined the United Brethren Church in 1848 and some time
afterward he was licensed as a quarterly conference preacher,
which relation he sustained at the time of his death. Brother
Ketner was a good man, ever ready to express his opinions on the
leading questions of the day and to expose sin wherever he found
it. In the erection of the United Brethren Centennial Church in
Huntington Co., Ind., in 1874, Bro. Ketner did a noble part. He
was one of the trustees. His door was ever open to the
itinerant. Had Bro. Ketner turned his attention to the ministry
as he felt that he ought, he would have been an able minister.
He was a brother of Rev. W. C. Ketner of White River Conference.
He leaves to mourn his departure, the companion of his youth,
two sons and one daughter, two brothers and one sister, but they
mourn not as those who have no hope. May grace sustain the
bereft friends. The funeral services were conducted by Rev.
Harvey of the M. E. Church in Andrews.

Edwin D. Sloan
EDWIN D. SLOAN was born August 15th, 1839,
died November 5th, 1896, aged 57 years, 2 months and 21 days. He
enlisted in the late war in 1861 and served his country
something over three years in Co., K. of the Ohio Infantry. As a
soldier it is said "he was faithful and true". Brother Sloan
confessed his faith in Christ many years since, and has ever
been a consistent member of the United Brethren Church, In his
death the church loses one of its best members, the neighborhood
a model citizen, the wife a kind companion, and the children a
loving father, but: their loss is his eternal gain. He was
married to Miss Nancy Hauk August 7th, 1867. She departed this
life August 1st, 1874. This union was blessed with one daughter.
April 8th, 1875, he was again united in marriage, with Miss
Melissa Dodderer. A son and daughter blessed this union. Thus a
wife and three children are left to mourn the loss of a kind
husband and a loving and indulgent father whose wise counsel was
always intended for their good. But he has only passed on before
to that bright and glorious shore where, pain and sorrow come no
more. May God bless the bereft friends, and lead especially the
unsaved son unto repentance that he may follow his father's
footsteps as he followed Christ, that they may make an unbroken
family in Father's house above. The funeral services were
conducted by the writer.

Margaret Stubbs
MARGARET STUBBS, whose
death we regret to record, was born in Frederick Co., Maryland,

months and 12 days. The funeral was held Monday January 4th, at
the United Brethren Church in Vermlllion, Ill. Sister Stubbs was
a good Christian woman and loved the cause of Christ above all
else, and let it be known by her life, but she was willing to
depart and be at rest. The church will miss her so much and the
home will be lonely. May God bless those she left behind.

1897, aged 84 years, 2 months and 12 Days. Mother Frey was ill
only a few days, and died at the home of her Son George, in
Freeport, Illinois. She was born in Juniata Co., Pa., and her
maiden name was Allaman. She was married to George Frey February
9th, 1S32. They came to Stephenson County forty-six years ago
and settled at Kent. Her husband died twenty-one years ago.
Since then mother Frey has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Jacob

Illinois in 1850, and through the untiring effort of Brother and
Sister Frey, a protracted meeting was held in Wingard
School-house conducted by Enos Collins. This was the beginning
of United Brethrenism in Kent. A church house was built, in
which hundreds of souls have been saved, and the old United
Brethren Church still lives in Kent to be a blessing to the
community, and to perpetuate the memory of Father and Mother
Frey. They are gone but not forgotten. She was the mother of
twelve children, five dead, and seven living to mourn their
loss. May the dear Lord bless the dear children in their
bereavement. The funeral services were held in the Dunkard

was stricken with paralysis, but survived it, being left
somewhat helpless for a year, when the fatal stroke came, and
she passed away peacefully and now rests with her loved ones in
the mansions of the blessed. She and her husband were converted
in a meeting held in Adeline, Illinois, in 1801, and joined the
United Brethren Church, in which she lived a faithful and
consistent Christian. She leaves two sons, grandchildren and a

large and sympathizing congregation assembled to pay the last

unexpected death is quite a loss to the church, to the community
and especially to her family. Her funeral was attended by a
large concourse of people, and in the midst of sobs and tears
the service was held by the writer, assisted by Rev. J. H.
Kiracofe. She leaves three children, three sisters, and three
