John Ketner

REV. JOHN KETNER was born in Rockingham Co., Va., November 29th, 1821, died at his home In Andrews, Ind., October 12th, 1896, aged 74 years, 2 months and 16 days. He with his parents moved to Preble Co., Ohio, about the year 1836. He was converted and joined the M. E. Church about 1838. He was united in marriage with Miss Rachel Lemon in 1844. To them were born eleven children, three of whom are still living. He joined the United Brethren Church in 1848 and some time afterward he was licensed as a quarterly conference preacher, which relation he sustained at the time of his death. Brother Ketner was a good man, ever ready to express his opinions on the leading questions of the day and to expose sin wherever he found it. In the erection of the United Brethren Centennial Church in Huntington Co., Ind., in 1874, Bro. Ketner did a noble part. He was one of the trustees. His door was ever open to the itinerant. Had Bro. Ketner turned his attention to the ministry as he felt that he ought, he would have been an able minister. He was a brother of Rev. W. C. Ketner of White River Conference. He leaves to mourn his departure, the companion of his youth, two sons and one daughter, two brothers and one sister, but they mourn not as those who have no hope. May grace sustain the bereft friends. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harvey of the M. E. Church in Andrews.

Edwin D. Sloan

EDWIN D. SLOAN was born August 15th, 1839, died November 5th, 1896, aged 57 years, 2 months and 21 days. He enlisted in the late war in 1861 and served his country something over three years in Co., K. of the Ohio Infantry. As a soldier it is said "he was faithful and true". Brother Sloan confessed his faith in Christ many years since, and has ever been a consistent member of the United Brethren Church, In his death the church loses one of its best members, the neighborhood a model citizen, the wife a kind companion, and the children a loving father, but: their loss is his eternal gain. He was married to Miss Nancy Hauk August 7th, 1867. She departed this life August 1st, 1874. This union was blessed with one daughter. April 8th, 1875, he was again united in marriage, with Miss Melissa Dodderer. A son and daughter blessed this union. Thus a wife and three children are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a loving and indulgent father whose wise counsel was always intended for their good. But he has only passed on before to that bright and glorious shore where, pain and sorrow come no more. May God bless the bereft friends, and lead especially the unsaved son unto repentance that he may follow his father's footsteps as he followed Christ, that they may make an unbroken family in Father's house above. The funeral services were conducted by the writer.
