John Mortner Kabrich was born May 28, 1828, and departed this life Apr. 6, 1904, aged 75 years, 10 months and 8 days. He was converted in the Evangelical Luthern church when sixteen years of age. and since that time has lived a devoted, self-sacrificing Christian life, denying himself many of the comforts of life that he might preach the gospel to others. On Nov. 9, 1849, he was married to Eva M. Fryer of London county, Va. To this union eleven children were born, two of whom have died. He was living in Virginia with his family at the breaking out of the civil war, and, feeling that he could not raise his hand against the flag of his country, he moved to Indiana in May 1863. Not being contented unless actively engaged in work for the Master, the same year he united with the U. B. church in Franklin county, Ind., The next year he was licensed to exhort, and in 1886 he was licensed to preach by the quarterly conference. In 1869, he joined the White River annual conference and was ordained an elder in 1875, and he has since worked incessantly in the ministry until disabled by sickness. He was elected presiding elder three consecutive years. He also served two years as presiding elder in the Indiana conference. In 1881 he was a delegate to the General Conference at Lisbon, Iowa., in 1885, to the Fostoria General Conference and in 1886, to the General Conference at York, Pa. He has not missed an annual conference for thirty-five years, and has served the conference as Preacher's Aid treasurer for eighteen years. We have here the record of a life well spent in the cause of the Master. Truly the good that our beloved brother and father has accomplished is worthy of our emulation. He can say with the apostle "I have fought a good fight." Brother Kabrich was a good man and stood high in the estimation of the people in his home community, and has very many warm friends in the conference. He said to the writer, "I am ready to go. I am waiting for the boatman." And as long as he could talk he spoke of his sweet, sweet rest in heaven, and, when unable to speak, he raised his hand heavenward. He leaves to mourn, the companion of his youth and nine children with a number of grand children, and many friends in the church and out of it. But we have a bright hope of meeting him where storms, trials, disapointment and death never come. May the mantle of this good man fall on all the bereft. The funeral services were conducted in the Daleville church by the writer, assisted by Revs. John Selig, M. V. Bartlett, J. C. Valentine, Jacob Beck and J. T. Holmes, as requested by the deceased. A large and sympathetic congregation was in attendance. Interment in the Daleville cemetery.
