Michael V. Gundy
Rev.
Michael V. Gundy was born in Tuscarawas
county, Ohio, March 25, 1822, and died in Bowerston, Harrison
county, August 2, 1906, aged 84 years, 4 months and 7 days. His
great-grandfather, Peter, was a native of Switzerland. His
great-grandfather Joseph was born in Lancaster county,
Pennsylvania, and was a Mennonite minister till he came to Ohio,
when he espoused the United Brethren faith. Benjamin, son of
Joseph Gundy, was perhaps twelve years old when they moved to
near Connotton, Ohio. He married Miss Mary Bower, a daughter of
Barnhart and Mary Bower, of German nationallity. They settled
near Strasburg, Ohio, and were the parents of twelve children.
The mother died 1829, aged 38 years, and the father and children
moved to Harrison county, Ohio. He remarried twice but no more
children were born to him. He died in 1871, aged 70 years. The
subject of this sketch is the seventh child of Benjamin and was
seven years of age when his mother died. He and a sister were
cared for by an uncle, Joseph Nofkser, of Conotton, till his
father married the second time. In 1840, at the age of eighteen
years he was converted at a campmeeting at Conotton, and joined
the United Brethren church. He labored on the farm with his
father till maturity, receiving his education at the common
schools and the New Hagerston Academy. He taught school fifteen
terms. In 1848 he married Christiana Overholt and they resided
in Wood county, Ohio, eighteen months. Then they returned to
Harrison county and in 1856 settled on the farm they still own
consisting of 208 acres. M. V. Gundy was licensed to exhort in
1861 and joined the Muskingum annual conference of the United
Brethren church at Marietta, Ohio, in 1867. In 1880 he was
ordained to elder's orders and has been an indefatigable local
preacher ever since. In 1872-3 he traveled Coshocton circuit and
1890 Crooked Run circuit. Rev. Gundy was an earnest logical
preacher and he continued at his calling until last winter when
his health failed. But his mind was clear and he devoted much of
his time to writing and correspondence. He was a good writer and
his lettere were interesting to young and old. Bro. Gundy was a
liberal supporter of the church. Few men of his means
contributed as much to the various demands of the church as he.
He was a good and kind husband, an indulgent father, a good
neighbor, a friend to the poor and honest in all his dealings.
Truly a good man has departed. May his mantle fall upon some
other. The services were held in the M. E. church in Beech City,
and J. Gonser of Strasburg. A large concourse of people attended
the funeral and followed the remains to the Conotton cemetery
where his grandparents his father and children rest.

Diana Comstock
Diana
Comstock (nee Patterson), was born March 4, 1827, in Geauga,
county Ohio, and departed this life August 11, 1906, aged 79
years, 5 months, and 7 days. She was married to Aaron Comstock
November 10, 1848, and to this union were born ten children;
eight of whom have passed to the spirit world. She was also
bereft of her husband July 22, 1880, leaving at the time of her
death one son, Russel Comstock, and Alwilda Beam, with whom she
has made her home for nearly twenty years. She was a member of
the United Brethren church, having been converted January 24,
1899. The story of her conversion is rather apathetic one
because of her advanced age. At the time Rev W. C. Price was
conducting a revival of Zion church; the night of the 24, was so
stormy that there was no services and Brother Price remained at
Jas. Beams, the home of Mrs. Comstock. Before retiring, Brother
Price read and prayed, after prayer she remained on her knees,
calling upon the Lord for help. After praying with here awhile
she was wonderfully converted, and a beautiful light was
revealed unto her. Since that she has been a faithful follower
of Christ and a cheerful giver to his cause, although never
permitted to attend church because of her ill health and old
age. During her illness she manifested great patience, never
murmured nor complained, but seemed resigned to the will of him
who doeth all things well. She solicited the comforting
influence of prayer in her last hours and those that stood by
knew by her shining countenance that it told of heaven. The
funeral was held at Zion, August 13, conducted by Rev. George
Tuttle.
