Father Richards was always ready with his means to do for the church what he could. His home was the home for the weary itinerant, and many will remember the home with its kindness and hospitality. Father Richards suffered for five years but endured his suffering with Christian patience, just waiting for the messenger to bring the summons and thus passed away in the triumph of a living faith. He was a kind and affectionate husband and in his death, the wife has lost a good husband, the church a faithful member and the community a good citizen, He has left a good faithful wife, one half-brother, and one half-sister with a number of friends to mourn, but these need not mourn as those who have no hope. He was the third of a family of ten children of whom one brother, Hamilton Hills, survives. He was married to Mary Jane Curtis, who with a babe, departed this life leaving one daughter, Mrs. Dora Adams, of Pleasant Lake, Indiana. At times his suffer ings were intense but he bore it all patiently. We feel assured that his faith in his Savior was great, as at times when relieved from pain in talking with his companion he said, "The Lord is good," and when speech failed him with his hand he pointed upward. Alexander Short was born in Stark county, Ohio, April 8, 1840, and died at his home in Stryker, Ohio, August 1, 1910, aged 70 years, 3 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn: the life companion, who was a loving and a devoted wife, and a number of close relatives and a very large circle of friends. At the age of fourteen he came with his father to Springfield township, Williams county, Ohio. His mother died when he was three years old. He saw many changes in this country and helped to make them for he was a hard working man, and by careful management gained a nice property, and by his quiet, kind and social life, made friends with all who knew him. On April 26, 1860, he was united in marriage with Ellen Jane Short, and together they traveled the path of life a little over fifty years and shared each others joys and sorrows as true companions always do. Although he never united with any church, yet he often expressed himself thus, "I cannot see how people can be so wicked as some are," and often said to his wife, "I am trying to live each day to be ready to meet my God in peace when 1 am called to go." He said that he expected to go as a candle goes out, and so he did. He got up in the morning as well as usual and before nine o'clock was gone to the great beyond. He believed in the Christ of the Bible, believed he had power on earth to forgive sins and was thankful every day for the blessings of God to him. In speaking of death he said it would not be death; only going to rest.
