Rev.
A. J. Gear
Rev. A. J. Gear died near Knights Branch,
Dec.25th, 1865; aged 46 years, 6 months and 23 days. His disease in the first place was
lung fever, but finally terminated In typhoid fever. He bore his sickness, which lasted
about two weeks, with Christian patience; although he suffered greatly he was not heard to
murmur. From the first of his sickness, the impression seemed to he very vivid upon his
mind that he was going to die. He seemed perfectly resigned, and longed to depart and be
with Christ. He was conscious all the time, and talked freely to his friends, exhorting
them to meet him in heaven. His prospects for future were clear and bright. He leaves two
sons and a companion to mourn his loss.
Bro. Gear
first received license to exhort at a quarterly meeting held on Brewitt's Creek circuit,
Wabash conference, Nov. 4th, 1864, W. C. Smith, P. E. He received license to preach on the
above named circuit, at its fourth quarterly conference June 9th, 1855. He received annual
conference license to preach at an annual conference held in Vermillion County, Ind., Aug.
18th, 1856, and was ordained April 4th, 1859, D. Edwards, bishop.
The most of
Bro. Gear's time after he became an annual conference member, was spent in the itinerancy:
and, as far as we can learn, he was an acceptable and successful minister. May the many
that have heard him expound the Scriptures, meet him in that sun-bright clime, where the
wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest.
His funeral
was preached by Rev. J. Griffith, from Rev. 21st chapter and 7th verse, to a large and
attentive congregation.

companion, who is left behind a little while longer-but who expects ere long to unite with
her near the throne.
