Jacob Shuey

JACOB SHUEY was born in Augusta County, Virginia, on the 20th of June, 1797, and died in Johnson County, Iowa, on the 30th of October, 1867, aged 70 years, 4 months, and 10 days. He embraced the Christian religion at the age of 17 years, and joined the U. B. Church at the time of his conversion; since which he lived a faithful Christian and an honorable member of the Church for a period of 53 years. As a husband, he was pleasant and companionable; as a father, he was affectionate and kind; as a neighbor, he was obliging and peaceful; and as a citizen he commanded the respect of all classes. A few days before his death he selected the 4th, 7th, and 8th verses of the 4th chapter 2d Timothy, for his funeral text, and the minister to preach on the occasion. He died as he lived, with unfaltering faith in Christ and groat peace with God.

Beckie Light

BECKIE, daughter of Samuel and Catharine Light, of Lebanon, Pa., after several months' severe illness, borne with Christian meekness, fell sweetly asleep in Jesus, on the 9th day of October, 1867, aged 20 years, 4 months, and 17 days. Not often are we called upon to record the death of one so lovely in her life, so marked by Christian virtues, so gentle in disposition, and so charitable and generous in heart, as was our dear Beckie, The light of joy and peace made glad her eyes, and rejoiced the hearts of those who knew her but to love her. But Death, the insatiate archer, marked her for his own, and she do-parted from earth to rest in that clime where tears and sorrows and partings never come. But twenty-one years had shed their blooms of spring upon her head, and her friends fondly hoped and wished she might live long yet to fill their hearts with happiness and love. Her family and friends are bereft of one of their dearest joys, and the Church of a most exemplary member; but they mourn not without comfort, but by imitating the holy life she led hope to die as she did, calmly and gently, and meet her where embraces will forever be sweet.

A FRIEND.

N. (Nathaniel) Smith

REV. N. SMITH died in Vernon County, Wisconsin, September 25th, 1867, aged 58 years and 1 day. The subject of this notice had been a member of the Wisconsin Conference ever since its organization. He had been an itinerant preacher in the United Brethren Church for thirty-four years, and was faithful in the administration of God's word. Often when he was scarcely able to be round, he would be found at his appointments. He died very suddenly. In the morning he arose, and went out and done a few chores; came in and took up one of the children. He sat a little while, and told his companion that he felt so queer, and said : "I am dying." He requested her to give him a little water, then started for the bed, which was but a few steps, assisted by his wife; but before he reached the bed he fell to the floor and was gone. Some two weeks previous to his death, he told his companion that he would not live long; told her how and where he wanted to be buried, and who he wished to preach his funeral; saying that the gospel that he preached to others was able to sustain him in the dying hour. He leaves a wife and children, and numerous friends, to mourn their loss, but they need not mourn as those that have no hope, their loss is doubtless his eternal gain. May great grace rest on the bereft friends.
