United Brethren Genealogical Search Engine:

The Obituary Index contains citations of obituaries for United Brethren pastors and lay-people, Huntington University alumni, and many others who have been listed in United Brethren related publications.

The following publications have been completely indexed:

• Christian Conservator (1885-1954)

• The United Brethren (1954-1994)

• UB (1994-1993)

The Religious Telescope (1834-1946) has been partially indexed with coverage for the years 1834-1849. Work is continuing on this publication.

The Obituary Index also indexes citations to other publications as found in the Bush-Meeting Dutch. The Bush-Meeting Dutch is a "quarterly newsletter of local history and genealogy of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church, its predecessors, and sister churches." A portion of each issue is devoted to citations of obituaries from the various Evangelical United Brethren periodicals. These are not the actual obituaries but they usually contain a condensed version of the obituary. The publications are not available at the United Brethren Historical Center but the citation and condensed obituary may be requested. The following publications are cited (the dates are for publication years indexed not the actual dates of publication of the periodical):

• Der Christliche Botschafter, selections from 1836-1865, 1880 (citations not complete)

• Die Deutsche Telescope (The German Telescope), Apr. 1847-Apr. 1850

• Evangelical Messenger, 1848-1866

• Die Evangelische Zeitschrift (The Evangelical Journal), Jan.-Nov. 1894

• Der Frohliche Botschafter (The Joyful Messanger), Dec. 1851-Apr. 1866

• Die Geschaeftige Martha (The Busy Martha), July 1841-Dec. 1851

Finally the Obituary Index contains citations to obituaries as found in local newspapers, and annual conference journals. As part of the daily routine of the Historical Center local newspapers obituary columns are scanned and clipped of obituaries related to the denomination or university. These are usually indicated by the name of the local newspaper in the citation. When a publication cannot be determined the source of the obituary is identified as "Obituary File."

Copies of obituaries may be requested from the Historical Center for a small donation. Please indicate the following information in your request:
