Summer 2014: AX Fall Planning Session

During the summer, the 2014-2015 President, Mr. Luke Batdorff, the Vice-President and Program Chair, Mrs. Amy Landhuis, Region V National Council Representative, Ms. Bronwen Fetters, and the faculty sponsors held a planning meeting to develop ideas for the 2014-2015 year. These included new ideas for the induction and for program committees.

August 23, 2014: HU Freshman Opportunities

Chapter President Mr. Luke Batdorff did a presentation on campus honors groups to the HU Freshman Opportunities meeting during Freshman Orientation.

September 17, 2014: Fall Organizational Business Meeting

At the first monthly meeting of the year, officers were elected to join the President, Mr. Batdorff, and Vice-President, Mrs. Landhuis, who were elected at the last meeting of the spring 2014 semester. Secretary for the year will be Ms. Esther Higginbottom; Treasurer will be Mr. Ben Blum; and Public Relations Director, a new position, will be Ms. Amy Hetrick.

October 3, 2014: 2014 Alpha Chi Induction

This year we tried something different by having Alpha Chi officers deliver invitations to membership at the beginning of prospective members' major-level classes. Twenty-one new members were inducted on October 3, including The following students were inducted into the Alpha Chi chapter for 2014:

  • Benjamin Blum, a senior missions major from Park, Pa.
  • Michael Bowman, a junior chemistry and mathematics major from La Fontaine, Ind.
  • Tyson Bradley-Kalischuk, a junior accounting, business management, and economics and finance major from Alberta, Canada
  • Joanna Brenneman, a senior accounting major from Larwill, Ind.
  • Sean Fitzpatrick, a junior animation major from Sellersville, Pa.
  • Haley Glinz, a senior music major from Spring Arbor, Mich.
  • Rebecca Grimes, a senior social work major from Saline, Mich.
  • Tyler Herber, a senior history education major from Fremont, Ind.
  • Amy Hetrick, a senior business management and marketing major from Fort Wayne, Ind.
  • Clarissa Hunter, a senior communication studies major from Fairland, Ind.
  • Olivia Knispel, a junior biology pre-med major from Churubusco, Ind.

October 19, 2014: Chapter Social Event

An informal AX social event was held at the President's home on October 19: food, games, and fun.

November 4, 2014: Alpha Chi Graduate School Forum

Our traditional Alpha Chi Graduate School Forum was held on November 4, in the Longaker Recital Hall. A panel of experts made comments, followed by a Q and A session on the ins and outs of searching for the right graduate school(s), applying for graduate school, and various deadlines involved. Over 120 people attended: a new record for this event.

November 18, 2014: Alpha Chi Arts and Sciences Forum

The National Alpha Chi theme for 2014-2015 was on "The Nexus of the Arts and Sciences." This forum focussed on the question of "What do the Arts and Sciences have to say to each other?" and featured presentations by Prof. Steve Leeper (Department of Digital Media Arts), "The Phi Phenomenon: The Illusion of Making Movies," and Prof. Bruce Evans (Department of Biology), on "Visual Illusions." A standing room audience of over 140 in Hiner Hall was fascinated by how digital media arts and the sciences have interacted in the past.

2015 National Scholarship Nominations

The Indiana Beta Chapter nominated Ms. Clarissa Hunter and Mrs. Jannea Thomason as our candidates for the National AX scholarship and fellowship awards for 2015. Dr. Eilers heads up the Scholarship Committee.

February 19, 2015: Alpha Chi Theatre Forum: "Art, Science, and Integrity"

Our second "Nexus of the Arts and the Sciences" program of the year was on February 19. Following the performance by the HU Theatre troupe of the play, The Ruby Sunrise, Alpha Chi hosted a talk-back panel session with Director Scott Evans, and Professors Jay Duffer (Theatre Department), Lance Clack (Digital Media Arts Department), and Dawn Ford (Digital Media Arts Department). 

March 5, 2015: Alpha Chi Forum: Are You Smarter Than a College Student?

The annual competition between faculty and students, "Are You Smarter Than a College Student?," will be held March 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Longaker Recital Hall. 

2015 Regional Scholarship Contestants

The Indiana Beta Chapter will have six students competing for the Region V scholarship and fellowship at the National Convention in Chicago, March 19-21, 2015. Presenting papers in the competition will be Ms. Bronwen Fetters, Ms. Esther Higginbottom, Mr. Alex Hoffman, Mrs. Jannea Thomason, Mr. Andrew Wickersham, and Ms. Yang Wu.

March 19-21, 2015: Alpha Chi National Convention, Chicago IL

Eleven delegates from the Indiana Beta Chapter will be attending the Alpha Chi National Convention in Chicago in March: seven students (Mr. Luke Batdorff, Ms. Bronwen Fetters, Ms. Esther Higginbottom, Mr. Alex Hoffman, Mrs. Jannea Thomason, Ms.Emily Thornton, Mr. Andrew Wickersham, and Ms. Yang Wu) and three faculty sponsors (Dr. and Mrs. Michelson and Dr. Nalliah). The chapter will be presenting two chapter strengthening workshops at the convention and contributing to the National Service Project with the Art Therapy Connection.

April 15, 2015: Academic Research Forum

Alpha Chi will again be collaborating with Student Senate in hosting the annual HU Academic Research Forum on April 15, where students nominated by their departments will present papers.

April, 2015: Chapter Social Event

An informal AX spring social event is planned.

April 26, 2015: President's Reception

The annual Alpha Chi Reception and recognition of graduating AX seniors will be hosted by President Emberton on April 26, 3:00 pm at the President's home.

May 5, 2015: Forester Night

The Outstanding Scholar of the Year award will be presented.
