Grad student uses skills from classroom in counseling position

“My bachelor’s degree is in ministry, and I would like to combine that training with my master’s for ministry overseas. I plan to serve overseas counseling missionaries and their families.”

Jarred Bauer chose to enroll in Huntington University’s Master in Counseling program through the recommendation of a friend.

“I was looking for a faith-based program that would include Christian counseling and a biblical perspective,” said Bauer, a 2012 graduate. “I heard great things about the program, the director of the program, Dr. (Jerry) Davis, and the other professors.”

Bauer found exactly what he was looking for in the classroom experience and professors.

“The coursework is comprehensive, offering empirical evidence-based practices and material along with a Christian view and biblical perspective,” he said. “It was exactly what I was looking for.”

Bauer currently serves as a home-based therapist for Park Center, a community mental health center located in Fort Wayne, Ind. He provides individual and family psychotherapy for clients referred by the Department of Child Services or those on probation.

“I meet with the family or individual members in their home or in the community,” he said. “It is a holistic approach in which the client and I collaboratively work on the goals from the referral agency as well as their own personal goals.”

Bauer relies heavily on the knowledge and skills he gained for his education to work with his clients.

“I learned a great balance of technique and interventions along with how to build rapport and a relationship that truly was therapeutic,” he said. “People learn and grow best through experience and the relationships that create that experience. My education at Huntington taught me how to build the relational experience and help others toward personal growth and healing.”

In the future, Bauer would like to incorporate his bachelor’s degree with his master’s.
